M103 to Carbs
 

Please help me with this

I need to take a dicision to use m103 or m104 with carbs for a vintage rally car.

M103 with only 1 cam ,without vvt, dis cap at cam looks easier than m104 (edis,crank sensor)

The m103 3.0 91-92 us spec,
what are the parts of the ignition ?

what I need to use this engine with carbs and have control of timing ?

Are you racing this under a set of car build rules or is this a open ended project?

If under rules, they matter and will be the first place to look.

Rather than do a distributor, use a DIS system from a common car. GM systems from the 90's - 2000 are nearly self contained requiring only a crank pulse to operate. There is a default spark advance curve built in that may or may not be enough for your car. If not, a advance box should not be a big problem.

What ever you do, try to use off the shelf common road car parts, this will allow you to use the local auto parts for repairs. This is vital when traveling.

yes, I am under rules, I need to use carbs
6 days rally, 300 miles at day, reliable is the key, last year I use 2 engines,

the original ignition needs injections signal ?

what parts and how many integrate the original ignition ?

what is the gm ignition ?, distributor, coil, module, harness, crank trigger, which car ?

If I need to build and adapt ignition, I believe m104 and edis will be better option. ?

do you know a place to buy this engines ? used low miles, rebuilt ?

The original ignition for a M104 is built into the injection computer. I am not sure about the M103

It would depend on what engine you select.

GM = General Motors, a common auto maker in the USA. What brand os ignition you select depends on what is sold in your country.

M 104 would probably be the best choice because it is newer and you may be more likely to find a good used one.

I'm in Mexico, but I have a house in San Antonio Texas, then I need to found the parts nearest to tx.

I already found the gear ratio for the trans

To fit carbs on either M103 or M104 motor, you will have to hack the intake manifold to mount a carb. A rochester or Holly four barrell carb jetted correctly should do.

You will find that M103 motors are easier to find, less complicated to fix and if you are going to use the stock ignition, cheaper by far to set up. The ignition module for the these cars is referred to as an EZL and if you look for them on ebay, you'll find the M104 modules are incredibly expensive.

Adapting the GM module should be straight forward, but I have no experience with it. Would love to hear about any progress in that area.

I have put a Weber 32/32 progressive carb on an M103. To see my vehicle search "Mercedes W124 with custom distributor and Weber carburetor - M103 engine". I built a custom distributor and used none of the stock ignition. It was a lot of work.

The process was very worth it though and I will be putting a website up soon with detailed instructions and blueprints for the parts I had to have machined.
