Doesn't matter since MB doesn't sell oversize pistons and rings for the 603.97 :)

wowzer - pistons are pricey. I think we've about decided to find another long block.

I got another engine

This is a 3.0 liter out of an 87. Plans are to put it on the stand, replace the head gasket and all seals and bolt it in with it's original IP. Any thoughts in regards to the oil pan with the extended section on the side on the '87 engine. It looks like it will fit without any issues.

A quick peak at the SDL K-member should tell you whether or not the side sump will fit. Any reason to think a 126.134/5 has a different K-member from a 126.125?
If you're not pulling the oil pan, at least pull the side sump to see if any bits of an old vacuum pump remain. Maybe you can peak into the pick-up screen with a dental mirror. http://www.w124performance.com/image...r/oil_pan4.jpg Have you replaced a 60x rear crank seal? It's a bit tricky on an engine stand but I'm sure you have a hoist handy. Sixto 87 300D |

It looks like there is plenty of clearance in the '91 for this oil pan. I will pull the side piece and inspect it. |

How goes the engine swap?
Sixto 87 300D |
Got it running today:). The 3.0 that is now in it seems like it is a good engine. I'm not picking up my tach signal for some reason and I've got to flush the crap out of the coolant system. Other than that it looks like it came out good.
Is there a market for a properly built up 3.5 liter? Wonder if I could put it on ebay as a rebuild with a reserve to cover costs plus labor with the stipulation that the rebuild starts when the bidding ends. |
Metric wants $6400 for a .97 short block with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty. Adsit (did I say Adsit?) wants $8000 for a long block (image shows IP) with discount that offsets core charge and general 30 day exchange warranty (I didn't see a specific engine warranty).
Going the other way - rods list for $270 and discount to about $200 (I think you have to replace all 6 to keep balance), sleeves list for $95 and discount to about $70 (who knows what they cost to install), pistons are $520 and discount to $375... You can't undercut Metric profitably on a full rebuild because of the warranty risk. Replacing only the rods if the cylinders are serviceable might be an exercise in getting your money back. So how about my offer? :) Sixto 87 300D |
Did you transfer and connect the flywheel sensor by the oil filter?
Sixto 87 300D |
hmmmm, I used the sensor that was already on the 350SDL. I do not have the sensor off of the 300D. It is preventing the a/c from working too. I'll look at the p/n's on the different sensors tomorrow. I suspect that the sensor is the issue because of the somewhat different flywheel on the 300D.
|
Hmm... that's not something in my .96/.97 swap notes. 300SDLs and 350SD/Ls use the same sensor 006 542 51 17. The 87 300D/TDs use a different sensor with the succession 006 542 28 17 -> 008 542 17 17 -> 010 542 22 17.
Now I wonder which sensor and flywheel I used in my swap because everything worked. I just might have a spare sensor from an 87 300D. Sixto 87 300D |
This is strange. EPC says the the .960, .961 and .970 use the same flywheel. I don't see a separate part for a trigger or trigger wheel.

The hardest part so far has been trying to get the coolant system cleaned out. I have been filling/flushing for the past few days with a little Tide thrown in every now and then and I'm still getting oil out.

Try dishwashing soap.
