Question This is weird

When my recent starting problems suggested a possible "FUEL System Bleed Down" I was told to keep cranking the engine a few times and it should start. Fearing I would kill the battery, I decided instaed to pump the gas pedal a number of times. As soon as I did that the engine kicked over immediately.

NOW, having told this to my mechanic, he is puzzled and maintains that pumping the gas pedal on a fuel injection system has no effect whatever. Yet it made all the difference in my case and what is more, the owners manual says to pump the pedal a couple of times in real cold wheather. I Am CONFUSED.

Would appreciate any comments regarding this matter.

Thanks, Dieter

Dieter,

I had the same problem with a Benz I used to own. I was told by my dealer that there is a relay located on the gas tank that holds fuel pressure in the line when the vehicle is turned off! This relay often goes bad and the fuel returns to the tank, letting air into the line. When you pump the pedal you are getting fuel that hasn't drained back to the tank ( as a reslult of the bad relay) and is left up top ! Thats why the car cranks.

Fuel Relay ?

Brandon,
Thank you for your reply. In looking at the fuel delivery system I see an ACCUMULATOR and a fuel pump CHECK VALVE, but no RELAY. Are you by any chance referring to either of those two items ?
