90% sure now the big leak is the Oil Filter as its attached to the block. Removal is from the bottom taking off the Starter. Once that's off I hope to confirm this. Talked to Roy today about it, that's his diagnosis also and said those gaskets are notorious for leaking that bad.

Got the car while employed with a great job, then the recession hit : (
So I'm stuck for now with it. But the fact its not the rear main seal and just an easy to get to $1.98 gasket brings my confidence back up. Will tackle the oil sender unit afterwards starting with the wiring harness as mentioned above. Thanks for all the advice and insight.

Benefits I'm seeing with the W124/M104 car is at least I can work on most of this to keep it on the road, compared to a front wheel drive rice burner. I'm seeing more and more problems with those, and the home mechanic cant really work on them.

Considering selling my gas guzzler truck now for a W123 300D since I will need to drive a long way for work now.

Don't forget to fix the oil level sender leak too, that is replace the gasket. Fix the easy ones and you may find it doesn't leak anymore.

The first step is to find it. Have you found it?

sending unit is above starter disconnect battery as you hit positive on starter with a wrench

^^^ this

expensive cars dont know they are old.

wish ida hit this list and not pointed three while G hunting. never knew to avoid the 91-95 wiring harnesses. theres the typical expensive car part screwing, and then theres the unusually stupid engineering mistake on an expensive car to compound it. oh well. i like to solder, oddly enough!

After lots of inspection and late hours with Roy I'm pretty sure I found the problem/s:

Removed Starter and Oil Filter Stand
Removed Oil Sending unit

Wire to the Oil Pressure Sensor was frayed. The two wires from above to the Sensor and Sender need replacing.

While the ship is in Dockside Availability ;-> I went ahead and ordered a Transmission Filter kit and the dreaded K1 Spring Kit.

Button it all up tomorrow. We shall see...

Angry VERY FRUSTRATED!!!

OK,

Removed oil filter stand and cleaned, replaced gasket. Polished up all surfaces mirror smooth. Taking off and on was NOT fun due the inaccessibility of the top bolts, even with the starter out. Had to make my own tool to do it by cutting down a 6mm allen and taping inside a 1/4 6mm socket and it was still a bear.

Reinstalled Starter. Replaced oil sender unit wiring harness with new wire and soldered connectors (has level and pressure wires).

Replaced Oil Level Sender gasket. While I was at it prepped/primed/painted the battery tray and repaired a leaking hose under it.

Filled with oil, replaced coolant, buttoned up and started, and LEAK IS STILL THERE AND FILLING UP TRANSMISSION BELL INSPECTION PORT. Only this time its new oil, not old.

Oil is running down drivers side of the bell housing.

WHAT is on the rear drivers corner that could be doing this. Leak is a significant one. It's virtually impossible to inspect even with a mirror.

Could the POSITION SENDER UNIT-HFM (part no 003 153 01 28) leak oil?

Thumbs up Thanks a lot

Hi guys,

Got the problem some time ago. Decided to solve it when oil change was due, as I suspected the pressure valve on the oilpump to be the culprit. (The pressure varies with revs instead of going straight to full when revved - and when starting up it takes a little time before pressure is reached during which engine sounds and feels as non lubricated).

In this case the piston in the valve could be leaking thus allowing oil to reenter the oilswamp instead of going through the engine. This problem is relatively easy to fix. Consult a Haynes manual about it. Oil out. Crankcase cover of. three bolts out. Pump out. Spare piston in. Spring replaced. Reverse the work. Fill oil.

BUT: my oillamp in the dash does not flash even if the pressure goes to 0.4. I think this is consistent with your solution to the problem. Thanks for maybe releiving me of a lot of work.

The pressure stays above 1.0 kilos when put in N or P. That is the pressure only drops when I am in Drive or some of the other gears.
Strange, isnt it?

When is the idle revs normal to measure? When in gear or when in N or P?

dalle, the oil indicator senses low oil level in the oil pan, not oil pressure ... that's the purpose of the oil pressure gauge.
