Identity of mystery german document in my car?
I bought my 300E used. I found this mystery document in the car. It is a 1 inch by 8 inch strip of paper with "computer feed holes" at left margin. Writing is in German in green with many boxes including VIN (fahrgestell number) and many other ones that I don't recognize. Also has numbered boxes 40 through 68 and a light adhesive backing. VIN is from another 1988 300E but its not mine. I suspect that these are all codes (colors, equip. etc.) for some other car that had its part(s) installed into mine but wonder where this document came from (what was it originally stuck to?) and possibly how/why it ended up in my car.
Any ideas/info appreciated.

That document was originally affixed to the last page of the
maintenance booklet that comes as part of the car's manuals. That's where mine is. The booklet gives you an index which identifies what those codes mean. Zach 1992 300CE |

I found a similar document in my '86 300E. It was underneath the passenger side carpet and sound deadining ( I think that is a word) pad. It is adhered to the sheetmetal that goes from the floorboard to the rocker. I believe it is a factory build sheet checkoff form, as the car went down the assembly line during construction. I noticed there were initials/signatures of perhaps, inspectors or the workers themselves signing off of work completed. I discovered it when I was disconnecting my Lambda sensor wire connector which comes thru the transmission tunnel enclosed in a nice wire trough underneath all that carpeting material that I was refering to. Oh, and mine is also written in German. My Porsche had a similar sticker in the trunk, under the carpeting, and a duplicate inside the Warranty and Maintenance service booklet. They were all the codes the factory uses for options which were built into the car. So if your car came with it's original service history maybe it is in the book also. I hope this helps.

Thanks
Makes sense. Now to figure out why someone else's build sheet is in my car.

it's always a trip poring through what the PO leaves behind. when i opened the zippered case that contains the manual, i found one for a 300D! i had to buy the correct one from mbusa (only $10 though)...
