2006 E320 CDI - how do you chekc trans fluid

Hi folks, can someome provide me the procedure to check the trans fluid. I have a dip stick but I can't seem to get the end off. There was a red tab but when I grabed it it broke.

Please and thank you

No harm. The red plastic tab is a lock to prevent unwanted tampering on the transmission. The cap just pulls off but has an o-ring so it might be snug.

In order to check the level you will need a 'dipstick tool'. It looks a lot like a engine oil dipstick but is longer and not intended to remain in place.

With the transmission thoroughly warmed up (drive 20-30 mins) park on level ground and wait a few minutes for the level to stabilize (engine running - car in park). Insert the dipstick tool until the plastic end touches the bottom of the pan but don't push so hard that you deflect the tip. Like anything a little practice helps. The business end of the tool has two band areas separated by a series of hash marks. Each hash mark is about 0.1 liters. You want the level to be in the top (upper) band. The hash marks are designed to aid you in determining how much to add. If you over add you must drain some out and start over. Be sure to use the correct MB approved ATF. When you have the proper level, replace the dipstick tube cap and insert a new locking tab.
