lower subframe replacement on 1979 450 sl
Thanks to MB DOC for his recent advice. I called my local dealer and have an appt. to have the lower subframe replaced. I also discovered that there was another safety recall on this make and model for a problem with the accelerator pedal cable linkage (which is also getting done). What I am curious about is the following: My local dealer tells me that while the subframe and attendent labor is free of charge, there is an installation kit that I will probably need to pay for (approx $100.00) and that the job may generate about another $300. in various bushing replacements. I have no problem with this if it is legit., but can't escape the feeling that I'm being had. Any additional advice out there?

It would not be practical and surely not advisable to reuse the subframe bushings which are a maintenance item anyway.
If they are covering the subframe and install I would advise them replacing anything they find including lower control arm bushings. |
I just had the subframe replaced on my 73 450sl two days ago. I was told I needed lower ball joints replaced at a cost of $300.00. It seemed a little high, but I did it anyway. The car was great before, but I think its even a little better now; a little tighter. I had previously replaced the subframe bushings. I think these are a $75.00 item, and I'd get these replaced.

ITS true the safety recall includes the new subframe & even a lower control arm IF it is bent, HOWEVER it doesn't include new rubber engine mounts OR subframe mounts. So spend a few hundred & have all new front end rubber bushings, the front end will feel a lot better.
