93 300E Milestone

Our US version, 93 300E 3.2L 104 motor passed a milestone tonight...have a look! Notice the trip odometer, reset it at 333,000 to get both odometers to read all threes at the same time.
Bought it 12 years ago with approximately 120,000 miles, it has been a blessing ever since never leaving us stranded. Replaced the transmission at approximately 325,000, the fluid was excellent as were the forward shifts, but reverse was weak. The engine and differential are still original. This is our second Benz to go past 300,000 - the first was an '85 300TD. |
Congrats!! This is encouraging for me. I have a '94 E320 Coupe with 184,000 on her and runs smooth as silk. Though I do occasionally get a little slipping in the tranny when it shifts from 2 to 3rd when leaning on the gas. I "bypass" this slippage by lifting off the gas for a moment, letting it shift into 3rd and then get back on the gas.

My '93 300E 3.2 also had a milestone yesterday, but it pales in comparison at only 200K miles.
Pretty awesome to see these old cars just keep on performing. |

My '93 300 CE just hit 206K. We replaced the head gasket recently but no valve work because of the condition. You could still see the crosshatching in the cylinder walls. I change oil about 4000 miles. It is never down "a quart" like other cars. I can see this car is a 300,000+ contender.

Steering Part Replacement
Lee,
Replaced the outboard joint on the right rear control arm at 224K, the front lower control arms and all tie rods at 267K, strut mounts at 271K. The center link, damper and idler arm bushings were done around the mid 200's? I did not write that one in the maintenance book. Looking back I would have changed the control arms and the strut mounts sooner, they made a huge difference. Always check for loose parts and cracked boots when doing maintenance, noticed the center link loose first and replacing it made a big difference also. Did a compression test at 308K it was excellent! All were approx 160 PSI. Keep an eye on the oil, this one never used oil until the high 200's (275?) and continues to use some, not a lot but some. If pulling the head for any reason, as old as these are, replacing the valve seals would be a wise move in my opinion while the head is off the car. |
