Super steamy W126 sauna

My W126 560SEL fogs up badly whenever it gets even a little cold. I can't imagine this is normal - I have to drive around with the defrost on high and be uncomfortable, or else lose all visiiblity. It's worse in the back of the car than the front.

On every other car I've ever had, if you took the interior door trim panel off, there was a sheet of clear plastic film that covered the metal door frame. So if you wanted to monkey with the lock or window, you would peel back the film, do your dirty work, and then careful stick the film back on before reattaching the interior trim panel. My W126 has no such film. I'm wondering if it's not supposed to be there, or if someone just tore it off and never put it back. The car was in Vegas for most of the lst 10 years so I doubt the steamy windows were a problem.

Any other ideas?

I would seriously wonder if the door which closes off the outside air intake and causes interior air to be recirculated is stuck closed. I've had this happen in other vehicles with manual heaters if the recirc. button is left on during the winter.

I don't understand MB climate control systems well enough to say anything more specific, but hopefully someone with some hands-on knowledge will respond.

Fogging

My 300D used to fog up in cold weather, check as 400E suggests. Also you might like to check that any intake vents aren't blocked with leaves or other such crap. This is quite a regular problem on the 123's. The outlets(drain holes) for the front vents are prone to this. Can't see it being the plastic though.Different model but I hope it's some help:-Bear

your A/C compressor should be running properly to remove the humidity. I believe if you select the economy setting on the pushbutton control the compressor won't run, thus won't remove the humidity.
Good luck,
Adam

Also make sure your rear floorboards aren't damp/wet. The additional moisture from a leaking windscreen seal or sun roof drain will only add to the "fog".

I had leaves that fell from a tree that I parked under that clogged up underneath the bonnet and blocked the airflow causing a similar condition to yours.

Matt.
