om603 ('87 300d) in a '93 300d???

Hello,

I have a '93 300d with a very tired om602.
Found a nice running 0m603 in a 1987 300d.
I can buy the whole doner car for a great price,
but I'm wondering how the swap will go. Here
are some issues I'm concerned about: firewall
clearance, length on transmission (bell), any
newer control crap that was added to that body
in 1990.

Does anyone think this is a worthy project, or should
I just re-ring (freshen up) the 602. What I was planning
was to hone, re-ring, rod-bearings, timing chain, glow-
plug, injectors, ect...

I hope someone can steer me in the right direction (HELP) !

What state are you in? Technically you are not allowed to do this swap... you can't put an older engine in a newer car.

Compu 85,

Thanks for responding.
I'm in Ct.
It's a pre obd-2 car, ('93 300d) I think they just stick a
wand up the tail pipe (for emissions) like my '92 Ford 7.3.

What do you think?

I don't know CT's laws. in CARB states they'll be really picky. I know in VA you could probably get away with it if you hooked up the EGR. In MI they wouldn't care.

Don't know what to tell you about the physical fitment. I do know the 6 cylinders had a 722.3 transmission, I think your car has a 722.4 which can't handle as much torque.

Where in the world did you get this knowledge????? This is the easiest project in the world especially if you have a donor car. I'm currently mating a '93 M104 to a '88 280GE there is a headache if you need one.

It will definitely fit, they are the same car. I've always wanted to do that swap with a 3.5L..... UMMMMMM 350D

FWIW, it almost NEVER pays to rebuild a mercedes engine unless you can get parts at wholesale and labor for free. It's not as simple as you may think either. There are literally several "standard" sizes of bearings without even getting into over/under sizes.
