Plastic Pieces in M116 Oil Pan / Changing Oil Level Sender Seals

Hey everyone,

I was just starting to fix up this oil leak on the 420SEL. I dropped the pan and found this:

I think it goes to that one far back hole.. But I'm not entirely sure, never had an oil pan off before. Also not entirely sure how to change out these seals, the FSM was not entirely specific.

I looked it up in the EPC, it looks like it goes on the bottom of the strainer?

What do you guys think? Is this an important piece?

It looks like its part of the screen/pick-up:

It looks like it pretty much sits right on the bottom of the oil pan. So if the oil pan gets hit..bam, its pretty much gonna break.

Has anyone replaced this before? Which of the EPC part numbers should I get?

Some more pictures. The part number is as the 102 number, the strainer is the other one I believe.

I've ordered a new pickup, the strainer was intact and had no abnormal holes in it so I didnt see a need to replace it. I also ordered a new pan because the old one had rust on the front and I didnt want to take the chance that it would impact the new pickup and break it when I install it.

Thats what I'm thinking but I've no idea when. It could have been like this long before we bought the car.

Give us a shot of the pan inside and out, if you will, sir.

I took the lower pan off my 300SD a couple of weeks ago and found marks on the floor of the pan where that four point plastic part made contact. I think that is the way it's supposed to be. Does your pan have four marks there?

Yes I did see some, what appeared to be scraping marks, on the bottom of the pan. The pan is on the engine now, held up by two bolts just to keep stuff out of the bottom end while I wait for new parts to arrive.

I'll take pictures when I go to take the pan down.

Thumbs up

Interesting. My SD's lower pan is bent in also. I suppose it is probably safe to say this is damaged also.

I wonder how this piece being broken effects the oil pumps abilities.. Hm.

I think the marks on the inside of the pan are from normal contact between the plastic pickup and the pan. I'd say by designed there is no room between them. It appears the four footed beast is supposed to keep large droppings away from the screen.

My doctor's diesel threw a turbo blade which found its way into the pan and beat a hole through the screen. I'd say the plastic parts in your pan resided against that screen when the engine was running and did its best aided by oil pressure to break through. However, I wouldn't believe the restrictions they produced did any damage to the pumps volume or pressure producing ability.

What pressure did your gauge show during idle and while driving?

that piece is to sop any large items from sucking up to the screen causing oil starvation and big time damage. with out it it should increase the oil amount getting to the pump, though it would not increase pressure. American cars normally run just the screen but as with all thing German they love to add extra protection if at all possible. MHO.

Idle oil pressure was nominal, between 1-2 bar if i recall correctly.

The new part should be here this week I believe. A new pan is on its way, that should be here Wednesday.

Alright, all put back together and replaced. The new pickup piece was much more pliable and soft compared to the old one. It had some give to it so that it wouldnt break like the old one did. It was only $10

I'm supposing the old one was pliable 'once-upon-a-time.'

Photos of the bent pan, please sir. My pan has a ding or two and I'd like to compare
