Hood insulation
 

What type of adhesive should I use to glue the insulation to my hood. Something strong and tacky so I won't have to hold it there while it dries

3M makes a spray adhesive that is very similar to a contact cement. You spray it on the pad and the hood and stick em together.

will it hold up to the heat from the engine?

Yeah, its what we use to install them in the shop.

It's called 3m 8090 I believe. It is specifically for hood pads

The glue is not cheap... in all I spent $80 on glue and remover. I didn't remove all of the old glue, I used the remover and got 90% of it off. I used 1 2/3 cans of the glue. I also didn't take the hood off, I had a helper and we aligned the pad with the hood in the normal position, then raised the hood to the service position and tamped it down.

x2 for the 3M 8090 stuff. Its like $15-20 for a can (all you need) at the local hardware store.

I used a paint scraper/spatula thing to get rid of the old pad and glue bits. You could also use an angle grinder with wire brush attachment.

Like it was said before, spray both surfaces, wait a few minutes, stick em together.

No issues on any of mine, oldest at 8 years now.

My experience is that the polyurethane foam material has limited life - typically about 10 years, but it varies with how much heat it sees, so a car with low mileage acculuation will probably get more hood pad life than a daily driver.

I replaced my original '88 190E 2.6 hood pad circa 1999. It started to disintegrate about two years ago despite only using the car during SoCal's mild winters (I store it during the summer and use my '91 MR2), but I had no idea how old it was when I bought it, and the aging process starts the moment it comes out of the mold.

About the same time I also replaced the firewall insulation, which required buying the whole metal assembly with the insulation installed. The replacement from MBNA has a woven fabric rather than the foam, and it has held up well.

I have a buddy who owned a complete '69 Camaro Z-28 2x4 cold air induction system, which has foam seals between the air cleaner and the hood. The foam disintegrated in the factory sealed plastic bag about 10 years ago!

i've had great success with LOCTITE Power Grab LOC PG Heavy Duty 10OZ 12CC L Two years strong and still holding.

Hood Pad
 

About 6 years ago I used a $3 tube of general construction adheasive from Home Depot to glue my hood pad back under the hood. I applied the eniire tube with a caulking gun.
Still holding up without a problem!

I have a tube of PL construction adhesive and considered using that. Wonder if it will hold up.

This seems like a bad idea to me. I believe it would hold the pad up well. However I think if you ever have to replace the pad again you'd be in for some hard work. I dont think it will be easy to remove the old glue.

I mean I suppose you'd just hit it with an angle grinder + wire wheel, not much stands up to that.

I've just used 8090 on all 4 of my MB's no issues at all. No disintegration, on garage queen or all season daily driver that never sees the garage.

But I have the PL here and the 3M is still at the store

I've used 3M's Super 77 glue (comes in a spray can). Spray the pad and the hood, wait until the glue gets really tacky and then stick the two together. No issues with the pad coming off.
