W124 Electric puzzle..

Hey folks.

'88 300E W124 driving along yesterday, and the wipers stopped working. Thinking fuse, I pull up, check fuse (all fine) tap the wiper, with engine running and wipers on the fastest setting and wham, it starts up again. Odd, I thought..

Ten minutes later same thing, except now it won't start again. The motor moves freely, you can move it with your hand, yet there is no response on any setting, even the washers don't work.

Ten minutes later, the windows stopped working, no response from any of the four windows! (I realise now I should have checked the sunroof... and maybe lights?)

As far as I know these are the only things that have stopped.. Anyone ever had a similar issue?? I'm slightly puzzled.

Thanks in advance for any help

Wipers:
Could be the combination switch/stalk on your steering column going bad?
Wiper Relay failing?

Windows:
Odd that all 4 go out. I would check all your fuses, make sure all the contacts are clean and fuses are in tact. It could be dirty fuse contacts.

When you push any of the window buttons (with the car off, key on) do the lights dim?

So over the weekend I had a chance to take a closer look, and as suggested cleaned the fuse port out fairly well.. Which made no difference. (although some of the contacts were very dirty)

After looking at various relays, (the four in the sealed box above the fuse compartment) I noticed one was slightly ajar, pushed it back in and presto!

Thanks for the advice guys, it is always appreciated.
