Help before my car becomes scrap metal!

I have a 1991 300E that will no longer start. It was driving fine until overflow hose blew and got water in engine. Engine is now dried out, has new spark plugs and wires and most gaskets are new. It was running again and the throttle chain (?) broke. (Could use a diagram to make sure that is back on correctly if anyone knows where to find one.) The car was starting but would die every time the motor got warmed up (was also getting hot). The starter locked up, think that is fixed now, but have not been able to start since then. I am open to any suggestions on getting this car started and what could be causing it to overheat and die. (BTW water pump is less than 2 yrs old) If I don't get it running soon I'm going to turn it into scrap metal, just want to love it like I once did!

What gaskets? Have you done a compression test? I'm wondering if you have any. How long was it driven after the hose blew off? Was it turned off or did it shut down on it's own when it blew off? May be time to find another engine.

How does the motor get water in it? Do you think it got hot enough to blow head gasket?
