92 400E transmission interchange
I was a mechanic for VW for quite a while, so I am capable, but I am new to Mercedes and I was wondering what other transmissions I can use in a 92 400E with a 722.354 transmission ? A friend of mine has one from an S500 (W140), but it is the 140 body style so I am not sure if that would fit, but I am getting desperate and need to find one or even just one that will work pretty soon. Am I correct assuming it can fit from most if not all 722.3-- transmissions ?
I am thinking it will need replaced since mine drops out of gear at stoplights and there is a noise like something is moving in the bellhousing that goes away when I put it into gear. (Torque Converter ??) ALSO - I have seen Mercedes service manuals on this site, but cant find any transmission manuals - I could rebuild it if I had the service manual handy. Thanks alot for everyone's help - bought this car for my wife and 1 hour later, it has a bad tranny - she is just sick about it and Im trying to get something done for her and her poor car. Almost any V8 trans from 1986 thru 1995 will fit & work.
The 4.2L trans is better as most of them start in 1st gear.

Sounds like the owner hid the problem from you...Sucks people are dishonest.
I can recommend personally rebuilt units at Sun Valley Mercedes, they do a great job over there and its dyno tested.

Yep, I found one from a 92 500, and it appears exactly the same one, but I am aware I would need to install the valve body from the 400E to retain the first gear start.
Anybody know if the torque converters would be the same ? The one I have is an MB37 converter from the 500 but I dont want to install the wrong one and mess something up. At least this lets me rebuild it without having the car up in the air nagging at me and the horror story that will result if I find an internal part being bad and waiting weeks for it. I am thinking of rebuilding it and then letting the local Mercedes guy here install it because it flat-rates at 15.2 hours and he said he would install it for about 500.00 plus it saves me from rolling around in the street (did that on my 4WD Ford Ranger and swore I would not do that again). MANY thanks for the help and I will repost if theres any more questions and definitely when the car is running again. |
