Back window film deterioration

On my '86 230E the back window film is looking like it's getting moisture in the corners. I am attaching a photo of the problem.
Is there a DIY solution to this? Or do I need to see a specialist?

cheers

That looks like delamination. Basically the sandwiched layers of glass coming apart.

I think you're looking at replacement.

Oh no! How much time do I have you think?
And what sort of cost are we looking at as a guess?

I'd think it would progress slowly, if that's the problem, but temperature will have a big effect. On an Acura I had, there was a small crack on the passenger side from a stone that did nothing for months. Then there were a few hot sunny days and it spread rapidly.

Online prices for the glass are in the $250 ballpark. You can do DIY glass replacement, but I'd probably look at paying for new with a good seal. That may be your root cause: moisture getting behind the seal, then wicking into the glass.

Replacement is the best route to go. We had our one 82 300SD rear window replaced by Safelite. It was $350 including the glass and labor.

I purchased a window seal from Mercedes, it was $85 or so I believe.

The window doesn't leak and the glass looks just like the original (fine heater lines) however they didn't do a great job of installing the chrome trim. They had a good amount of difficulty getting the glass to fully seat.

I've got another 300SD to have done in the same manner, however I dont think I'll have them do it. I wasn't all that pleased with the chrome install job.
