VIN decode help

Good afternoon,

My neighbour's nephew recently bought an MB. The VIN is WDB1240231A886998. The car has a standard transmission and is in need of a reverse gear from what I have been told.

When I went to look at the car, the only data plate I found on the car was in the engine compartment, nothing on the doors or lower windshield. Is this normal? The car has an expired NS safety sticker on it, so I can assume it was registered at some point. No paperwork is currently with the car.

On the tranny housing I found this:

124 260 0801 717 4120 1173654

Are parts for this tranny easy to find?

Thanks,

MAC

Parts should be available thru MB dealer network.

Make sure to check the linkage under the car 1st!

Many times the rubber grommet in the arm is worn or missing & that is the issue.

Also on that car the linkage arm is bolted to the shifting fork & that
bolt may be loose as well.

You can almost certainly get the parts from the dealer but they won't be cheap

The stripped down version of EPC over on EverythingBenz - Mercedes-Benz Forum and Web Search Using Google has the following for you

Mercedes Benz EPC 124.023 Chassis Information | Everything Benz

Don't rely on this version of EPC for the part numbers - the pictures are helpful but the numbers are only good for the first few pictures...

If you want grown up EPC go to www.startekinfo.com where as US citizen with a US address and credit card you can get free access.

For the record according to the number you posted you have a 717.412 manual transmission

This is normal, because this is a european (dealer code 226 - Munich branch, Germany) delivery 230 E model. Delivery date 02.11.1988.

I've read that some people have trouble with "the dealer" in the states when the car isn't an official import - that might not be the case; but if it is the classic centre in California is meant to be the place where you can always get an answer and of course the sponsors of this site.

If you want more VIN information try the link posted here

Russian VIN site - not working

(Ignore the title of the thread - there is an answer in there)

Thank you very much for the information.

When I tried the VIN decoder it came up as a "230 E JAPAN"? Where should the serial # on the engine be located? I want to see if the car still has the original motor.

Thanks,

I don't know for sure where the engine number on your engine is - all I can say is that on my OM617 it is on the left hand side of the engine close to the injector pump - left hand side as though you are sitting in the car looking forwards...

Located on the left side (driver's side) of the block (toward the middle).
