1995 E300 High Idle in Park

I recently purchased a 1995 E300 with 95,000 miles. It has a high idle speed in Park, around 900 RPM. Normal drive idle is about 600 RPM. What can I do to fix this? Is it controlled by any of the throttle linkage rods? I notice the rod across the valve cover slides around like one side has free play, is this normal?

I have a 1987 300D that I'm fixing but this 1995 E300 is so new to me, any advise is appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

No ideas about the high idle?

You could have a linkage problem but the idle speed is electronically controlled on your 95 model. It should be tested for fault codes and linkage verified.

The car is going to the dealer tomorrow for warranty tie-rod assembly replacement, I will ask them to check it. What should a typical repair cost in terms of labor and parts? (My local dealer has a tendancy to overcharge).

Thanks,
Brian

Did they do it right?

Dealer adjusted throttle linkage. At a stop light the car idles at 550 RPM, but in Park, it can idle "fast" at 750 RPM. This is an improvement over the "fast' idle of 950 RPM - at that speed the engine would "wobble" the car.

Q: Should the "fast" idle be 550 RPM, or is 750 RPM okay?

Thanks,
Brian

750 rpm's in neutral is right on the money :D

Enjoy you new E320?

Thanks for your reply, This is a 1995 E300 (diesel).

While in Drive, but stopped at a redlight it idles okay at 550 RPM, but if I put it in park for a minute it used to idle at 950 RPM. The dealer adjusted the linkage and it does 750 RPM instead of 950 PRM.

My 1987 300D idles at 550 and doesn't seem to have a "fast" idle.

Is 750 RPM normal?

They have replaced the steering linkage and there is still a shimmy, so the car is already going back. Should I ask for further adjustment on the idle?

Brian
