W126 M103 300SEL Motor Mounts...

Well, the passenger side failed on my car again. This is my third in a year (diff brands too), starting to become tired of replacing this thing.

Does anyone make these in the aftermarket that are reinforced? Maybe poly filled? I can deal with some added noise, it still has to be quieter than a collapsed mount.

Thanks

And was one of the brands you used OE Mercedes?

Hit Man X 06-09-2012 04:47 PM

Yup. One Uro and one of the Meyle 'HD'... the Uro lasted longer than the Meyle. I suppose I just received a crappy OE one, I even have the heatshield there.

I'd have taken the OE back to Mercedes with my violin to see if I could get another out of them. Aren't their parts warranted for a year anyway?

Hit Man X 06-09-2012 04:53 PM

I am not sure, I hope so. The Meyle one lasted less than a week, the Uro about four months.

Apparently there was something in a recent MB Magazine for MB car club members about different motor mounts for 116/123/126 that vary in hardness. I am going to check that out before I deal with the nonsense to replace it again.

A while back I read something that someone swapped in a V8 motor mount on the pass side, but I am not sure how that would work.

Lemförder....

I don't trust Meyle one bit. When I bought mine from Phil, on the phone after a couple of questions he steered to to Lemförders, which so far seem to hold up (about 1 year).

I wonder why no one had thought of coming up with a spring-designed version, using no rubber.... It could be doable, but might be more expensive.

I have only used Lemforders/OE for both mine and I have 4 years and 60k on my wagon and still look brand new. You can't skimp out on these unfortunately.

Meyle seems to be hit or miss. My strut mounts and fan clutch bearing bracket have been great, but other items have been not good. URO is ALWAYS miss.

Hmmm, I notice the driver side lasts virtually forever, and the passenger side on mine usually sags about halfway to the bracket in a couple weeks, then stabilizes out. Basically, when new, I can just slide an index finger between the heat shield and the metal edge (bracket) of the mount when new. Then it sags down to about 1/4 inch clearance and stays that way for a few years. The current one has been on 2 1/2 years and is still holding that 1/4 inch clearance. I've never had one actually sag to the point that it banged on the bracket or broke. I've replaced it about 5 times in 21 years, and I've seen no real difference in various brands/pricing.

What's your failure mode? Getting noise, or the rubber separated?
The heat on that side is terrific, even with the heat shield on the mount. The engine torques over in that direction, too. I bet the positioning of the exhaust system could contribute also; it weighs a ton, and if mis-aligned a bit could put extra leverage on that side. Might be worthwhile to loosen the exhaust and check alignment, and look over the other two mounts also; if you're losing rt side mounts that quickly then something is amiss.

Noise now, the thing fully collapsed. The car had the same mount from about '04 to sometime in '11 I think, would have to check records. Nothing changed in that time frame under the car, all exhaust mounts are in place. I guess I purchased this car around '06/7.

The Meyle HD is garbage as is the Uro (but the Uro lasted longer shockingly), I will try my luck with another OE mount. I have had more than one part that was new in the box fail, just part of life due to mass production.

My driver side too was replaced when the head was off, that is Meyle. Not sure if I have done the trans mount recently or not. :o

I wonder if you could use an injection needle and re-fill the mount with liquid rubber or tar that would harden and not leak back out....

S-Class Guru 06-15-2012 03:51 PM

I always assumed these particular 300SE mounts are just a solid hunk of rubber, not the later hydraulic liquid-filled variety. I never thought about it, or cut one open, but they sure look to be just rubber; and at the price, I assume they are just that.
