1987 300e Transmission problem

Hello!
My 300e is having some trouble. 1st through 3rd gear all work fine. There is some flaring when shifting from 3rd to 4th. Once in 4th gear, the car can maintain speed with little trouble, but if i apply the slightest bit more pressure to the gas, the rpms will skyrocket with little to no acceleration. I've just been driving around in 3rd until I can find a solution. I'm not much of a mechanic, so any help is appreciated.

Might help to know the amount of miles on the car, or if you know it has had a replacement done on the trans, anything that might help other than just the year of the car.
Also any maintenance history on the trans, when was the fluid changed last, anything pertinent like that.
The symptom would lead me to believe that a band or clutch pack is toast and you probably would be money ahead to replace the trans with a reman. If you were inclined to make it a DIY project you could maybe fix it more economically, but hey if it comes down to someone else doing the work, you won't really spend that much more for a whole trans, realistically. You would also get a warranty for I would assume a couple years.
I know this all depends on your financial situation and what your future plans are for this car.

The car has just under 132k miles without a transmission replacement. I don't know of any maintenance history, but the car has been sitting for about two years before I started driving it, which was about two weeks ago. So, there has been no fluid changes for that long. I will be changing out all of the fluids and filters within the next few days.

Thanks

Yeah that would be a good idea, remember to make sure they don't FLUSH the system as there is a drain plug in the torque converter. Any Dexron III/Mercon fluid is fine. You'd probably be in good hands if you take it to a European car specialist, it's pretty different than a domestic car transmission as far as servicing it.
Thats one thing I did think of is one of the pistons that apply the bands could be stuck or a ball could be stuck in the valve body.

Does the engine brake feature work in reverse? sounds like a problem with the K2 clutch to me, that's what produces the shift into 4th and holds the gear. Sometimes the teflon seals wear a groove into the clutch drum, which would cause need for replacement, also the rubber lip seals can go bad, especially when it sits for a long time.

Try checking the fluid first. I bet you are 2 quarts low

Certainly do the fluid and filter first, just putting forth some info if that doesn't help.

Changed the Transmission fluid and filter. It's still doing the same thing in 4th gear. The engine break does work in reverse. It has also started revving high while idling.

Just over 6 came out and just a bit more than that went in. It was a pretty dirty brown.

Sounds like the fluid change intervals haven't been good.

Could be the governor...could be many things. More than likely you are looking at a rebuilt unit.

:(

Took the car by the shop. I need a new transmission Going to replace it this weekend along with my cracked head. Should any maintenance be done to the fuel injectors while i have her open? Also...The insurance agency and mercedes shop refer to mine as a 260e even thought it says 300e right on the back of the car. Any reason for this?

Does the torque converter come out with the tranny?

Thanks!

What are the 4 VIN numbers after the "WDB"? IIRC EA30 is 300e and EA26 is a 260E (or 300E 2.6, depending on what year it is)

Oh and if it idles OK I wouldn't worry about the injectors. You can't really service or clean them at home all that well anyways. If there is a Bosch facility or other injection service facility handy you could get them cleaned. Otherwise just use a bottle or two of Techron in the tank.
