500e questions

Greetings,

I just bought a 1991 500E with 116'000 kilometres after 18 months spent in company of a Ford Escort Cosworth (Hardcore Euro Rally Special Hatchback:D :D :D ) and I have to say it is absolutely brilliant! It's really as good as everyone says it is. I wanted a car with the same sort of ground-covering ability as the Cossie, but with more refinement ( I got sick of all of the extra noises in the Cossie ). Which eventually led me to the 500E....

Unfortunately, all is not well : There is a rattle coming from the sunroof. I have checked and tightened all the screws I could see, but that didn't solve anything. I didn't take anything off, I don't feel qualified to do so, and so I'll have to have it fixed.

Who would you go to, a car audio specialist or the official Mercedes-Benz dealership?

I also have a problem with the pneumatic folding rear headrests which are not coming down, nothing happens when I press on the button. I tried with engine on and off.

I suspect this is a very expensive job for not much of a reward.

What would you do?

Finally, there is a button on the dash on the right of the hazard lights switch which shows a wheel with a snowchain on it.
What does this thing do exactly? I understand it doesn't really turn off the ASR?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Drive safe.

Congratulations Manu!

I'll take the first stab at it but I'm sure the other 500E brothers will chime in and help you out.

My sunroof doesn't rattle but I do know that when I close my doors...when the door "thuds", the sunroof really jumps in its place. I think this is indicative of all sunroofs as it is not an integral part of the roof. Maybe the rubber weatherseal has gone too flat and not cushioning anymore?

Do a search on this forum and you will find several threads about 500E sound systems. Michael has a very nice setup.

I wouldn't bother with the rear headsets.

The snowchain button will give the tires more slip tolerance before the ASR is activated. But this is only under a certain speed. Basically not an ASR Defeat switch for us speed (fun) hungry drivers.

Good luck and happy driving!

Err.. I hope it wasn't the highly tuned one doing 190mph chasing a Toyota Supra on the empty motorway at dawn, chased by the Swedish police, with cameras attached, in the 'Getaway in Stockholm' video? Check out www.getawayinstockholm.com if you don't know what I'm on about. It's all real, they are being completely illegal.. these guys are crazy.. and are lucky not to be in jail

Don't diss the supra

I know I am a die hard benz fan, but the supra is one of the fastest cars around. You can get anything modded on those cars, you name it...especially twin turbos...

Headrests

The sunshade must be completely retracted for the head rests to drop. Put the sunshade down then push it into the slot manually - mine goes about a cm further in. Then start the car and hit the button - the rests should drop like stones with a thud! They must be pulled back up manually. I've heard some people sya their's only drops when the car is in reverse - this seems like a possible "one of" quirk to me.

Manu,

Congratulations and welcome to the board. There are many resources including a large number of 500E owners here. Many questions or issues have been addressed and the search feature here works great in locating them. You should also go to "500e owner Roll Call" in the Hot Rod section and sign in.

I can add what others have already stated regarding the headrests. This has been checked by me dealer three times with no cure being made. They appear to be somewhat quirky and work when they want to.

Happy motoring

Steve

I've also seen the Getaway in Stockholm video. That was too crazy for me. I would never do that let alone videotape it. Then again I don't own a 450hp Supra. :)

Greetings everyone

Just wanted to say that Rbn3's worked first time. You were right I just had to tab on the sunshade for it to completely retract itself.

Headrests dropped first touch of the button.

Many Thanks again Rbn3

Drive safe

Manu
