I am in the middle of a database upgrade at work and I only have one day per week off. I am just going to bite the bullet and take it to the shop down the road this morning. :-l

well... It was the front crankshaft seal. John said it was loose and came out with little effort. The leak started off small, leaving dime size spots on the garage floor then suddenly it was bagle sized spots. Good news is the crank is not grooved and in great shape.

Started smelling a little gasoline funes coming from the Left Front fender. I looked in the manual. Appears I need a new charcoal canister. Anyone ever changed out one before?

I did remove the air cleaner asembly and did not smell any gas there. Only slightly around the left fender.

I noticed the dust boots on the rear "spring struts" are torn. I was going to just replace the rubber buffers on top of the shocks but now I am going to just replace the $L$ shocks.

From what I have read my 1986 560SEL has the first version 116 320 45 13.
Will the second version also fit or do I have to buy first version?

W126 560SEL Shock Bushings

The "Spring Strut" rubber bushings came in that I odered from South Atlanta Mercedes. So I decided to inatall them this weekend.
When I removed the old top rubber it looked almost new and was not any shorter that the new part. When I got the bottom rubber out it was a lot different than the new one.
Anyway, it was a pretty easy job. and this was definately what was causing the thump sound. I also found a 1/4 drive Snap-On ratchet in the back seat back rest. sweet.

The only bad part is when I went to do the other side, the darn top nut on the shock would not break free. The top of the stem with the "flats" was already gnarled and I could not get the vice grips to hold tight enough. So I decided to stop before I broke something. I gave it one last shot of PB Blaster and put everything back together.
I will get some metric nuts and "jam" them, may get a "Strap Wrench" to hold the body via the lower hole or use a Nut Splitter. I do not want to destroy the shock in the proccess. Not until I have new ones on the shelf anyway.

Educate me please. These are the bushings that would sit intop the hydraulic rams? I have a thump in my back end that I attribute to the diff mount. But in cars past, I have found the shock absorber mounts can go bad too. I have replaced a few of them. But not in the Benz. Would you also have part numbers handy?

Part Numbers:
114 326 00 68 for the bottom
115 326 16 68 for the top.
cost me $25. genuine Merceds parts.

These mounts are the ticket. I had put in new subframe mounts, diff mount, trailing arm bushings and still had the thump. (They needed to be replaced anyway). Now the thump is about a third of what it was and only on the side I didnt fix.

Thank you very much. Good info. I will add it to my list of things to do when I replace the accumulators and other little bits.

w126 thunk finally gone

I got the stuck nut off. It broke free after a few more tries. I did not have to use the nut splitter. The PB Blaster I applied last weekend must have helped.
The New spring-strut rubber mounts are now installed. No more "Thunk"!!!
This car is amazingly smooth at highway speeds.

Replaced a noisey water pump and a installed new idler arm bushing kit this weekend. While I was it I noticed the SLS hydraulic pump is leaking. Oh joy. New pump ordered and will install that next week.

I gotta tell you the idler arm kit made a huge improvement. It was starting to "shake N brake".

560SEL diary

Installed new hydraulic pump, No leaks. New front rotors and wheel bearings this weekend. The old 560 is driving very nice. Aslo replace the relay for the aux fan hi speed circuit. It must have been dead relay from day one when I got the car, when I jumper the temp sender connector the fan comes on now and did not before.

Captains Log:

I am starting to think the maechanic at the indy shop I go to tightened the wheel bearings too much. Ever since that job, the car picked up a vibration / shake in the steering wheel. Last week we replaced one bad tie rod and the dampener; this helped a lot but I still feel it some (and finally got a good allignment). We also noticed the rear trailing arm bushings had moved as though they were not seated completelly and they moved back out some. This was also fixed last week.

Another thing is the slight pull to the right no matter witch way the road tilts. The first time I got it alligned was right after I got the car about one year ago. It still had the slight right pull and thw steering wheel was clocked a bit to theleft while going straight on a flat surface. Got a second alignment with the new idler arm bushing but still exact same pull to the right. Then got it alligned a 3rd time with the tie-rod. This time it felt pretty good. But when the rear bushings got reseated it got alligned a 4th time and it 's back to the old right pull. Rant over.

Captains Log: 6 hrs later

Driving home from work today on I-10 doing about 55-60 mph I went through a patch of rain then I heard a "booming" sound like a car was near with loud exaust. But it was my car. I let off the gas and it went away and came back when I got on the gas. Once I was out of the rain it stopped maked the "boooooming" sound.

I would guess it is the center bearing carrier assy is going out.
