M119 air flow sensor help please

Hi all,

A freind and I are looking into what gains can be had from tuning the ke-jet system on our m104.980. In an attempt to improve airflow we want to fit a larger air flow meter, and have been thinking of using one from a v8 m117 or m119.

The 300-24 afm we are using now, has a diamiter of 80mm. The afm from a m117 560 has a diamiter of 100mm. So we need to know what size the m119 item is.

Can anyone help please?

Nobody???

Anyway here is a pic of the m104 afm, and the m117 afm next to each other. It may only be 20mm bigger, but that m117 part looks huge! I'm also assuming that the shape of the air flap on the 3.0 afm helps air flow?

Just need someone to measure their m119 for me:)

Being from the "Trick the Hell out of it" school, I hate to be a bubble burster but I think you are chasing your tail. The current AFM presents no significant airflow restriction. I dont have a source at the moment but I recall the restriction being somewhat less than 1%. The air flow sensor plate is already about 25% larger than the throttle body. The engine will run out of airflow well before the meter becomes a choke point. Since the relationship between the plate and funnel represents the fuel demand of the engine attempting to fit the larger meter is likely to only yield significant tuning headaches without gains in power.

We are just gathering data at the moment, before we decide to experiment with the engine. The idea was to build the engine as a 3.6 (like my black car is now) or maybe bigger, fit a tuned exhaust system, and a set of itb's, but retain the cis fuel system.

I know we could convert to efi and get all the power and benifits that go with it, but we are intrested to see what can be acheived with the cis system.

I know most people will say that it is a waste of time, but we plan on having fun finding out.

Also want to test what effect of the different shape's of the afm plates is.

The M119 only used KE jet for a year or so, i think it would be hard to find. I would think your mission is to increase fuel flow? If you put in a bigger air flow meter with the same displacement you get less fuel flow because the airflow meter opens the fuel valve.

Getting hold of an m119 unit is easy, there are 3 that I know of for sale as I type. The problem is none are local to me, and the breakers yards cant be bothered to measure one for me.

Fuel flow is no problem, as I can get all I would ever need out of the existing metering head. On the m104 engine we want to fit it to, each cylinder is 600cc, the m119 cylinders are each 625cc, so it would be a good match.

The 2 spare ports on the metering head would be used for mixture enrichment under boost presure, or simply closed off for now.

I could do this with the m117 unit I already have, but I suspect the design of the m119 unit is slightly better, hence my question about the afm size.:)

The afm size should be the same on both M119 and M117 they both have the same displacement.

I thought they might be but wasnt sure, the m119 dose have a different design of plate though.

Just thought I would post an update on things.:)

I've now got an m119 metering unit, funny thing is that it is smaller than the m117 (110mm vs 130mm) but looks to have a more direct path for the airflow.

From left to right: m104 - m119 - m117.

An ebay find is this rubber inlet boot from a porsche 924 turbo, which is a good fit on the m119 unit.

This is 2 sets of triumph motorbike throttles, mocked up with a cut down m104 inlet manifold.

They line up pretty good with manifold. Please excuse the string and cardboard!
