1997 W210 (E420) 5-Speed Auto Transmissions TSB info (for those looking).
What code is on the 1997 W210 5 speed auto transmissions that were "recalled", I know that vehicles built in late 96-early 97 had problems.
I know that the information that I'm requesting exists in the Forum beacause I've read it, but I've searched on every possible combination of the following terms and just can't seem to find what I'm looking for: "1997 W210 E420 722.6 5 speed auto transmission". I usually cut and paste info like that, but I was looking for a 92-95 E420, not expecting a reasonably priced 97 E420 Sport (built in Oct 96) to fall in my lap.

I believe one of the most common procedures on this tranny was an upgrade to the transmission control module. It was done to my mom's 97 E320.

THERE hasn't been any recalls on this transmission! Problems yes! But never recalled.

Found it!
Just in case anyone else needs this info, there was a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for the 1997 E420 (W210) 5 speed auto transmissions.
TSB No.: 980501980501 Summary Description: Replacement of automatic transmission 722.6 with transmission serial numbers up to and including 880338 TP 951700. *YC

A TSB is not a recall! A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin that is used by the dealer to help techs quickly identify problems. They do not HAVE to perform the repair.
A RECALL is when the company has an issue that is a MUST to be performed!

I didn't mean to imply that a TSB was a recall
Any ShopForum member who is looking to purchase one of these cars should be aware of the problem, or at least not be surprised to see a transmission replacement on the VMI for the vehicle they are looking at. I had a hard time finding this information and I put it here in hopes that it will help others. I realize that a TSB is not a recall, but I also think that a TSB that is of this magnitude might as well be.
