Angry sunroof on a 190e

please,please help i just bought a 1985 190e 8v.the dealer
just bought a new motor for the sunroof, but explained the cable was bad,so i read some posts here and got 2 looking,my problem
is that the cable is unhooked from the roof i removed it and if i feed through the motor while hiiting the switch the cable seems 2 work fine both ways through the motor but i have to hold the cable,if i let it dangle it wont grab either way,is this normal?should i change the cable?is there a adjustment?finally where does the cable hook 2?it looks to me like it connected to the rear middle "black crossbrace"and should the sleeve the cable goes in be visible from the roof with the trim off"headliner".mine seems like the cable would have to loop around to connect to that brace that seals the roof, but then it seems the sunroof wouldnt pull evenley thanks in advance steve

p.s. there was a spare motor assembly with the plastic gears ,brackets, and electronics, its defenitley not for mine "190e:
i beleive its for the sunroofs that pop up in front & back like i have heard about from this site,FREE to a good home and somebody who can shed some light on my problems thanks

190E sunroof

Hey Steve-
Thats quite the unique name you have there, but anyway i recently had to do some work on my sunroof. I have an 86 Euro 190E2.3 16V and there should be a small gold clip that the cable connects to on the sunroof and you should be able to see the cable running all the way back to the back of the roof. I would check to make sure there is nothing in the way of the cable inside the roof. Also you can actually pull out the entire cable easily and re install it very easily. the cable may be shot and have a break in it somewhere, so if i was you i would run the motor out until it cannot eject the cable any further and then just pull out the cable. That way you should be able to inspect the cable for any problems. If the cable is fine you probably need to replace that little gold clip. It can become bent over time and cause the sunroof to not function properly. If neither of the two work out to be the problem i really dont know what else it could be other than a problem with the motor, which you can access in the trunk, by removing the plastic gaurd on the left hand side.

Good luck, Pete

Any questions fill me in.

190E Sunroof

I noticed that your topic was on a 190 sunroof. I have a 1984 and the sunroof does not budge at all. When you push the button the motor just humms and the roof doesn't budge. What may be the problem? Do you think it is the cable? Does anyone have any info on how to get at the cable, motor etc.

I would appreciate any information on this

Thanks a lot!

Benz84

Benz84 - I recently had the exact same problem with my sunroof on an 86 190E2.3 16V and i am almost sure what yours is. First before i can really be sure you have to take off the cloth cover that is the bottom of the sunroof on the inside of the car. This can simply be done by deforming it a little bit so it can slide out. Once you have done this you can see the roof and the cable is exposed. Now there should be a small gold clip that grabs the cable where it connects to the piece of the roof that slides in and out. On my car this piece became bent over time and would no longer engage the cable to the motor so the motor would run and the cable would not go down. But if you disconnect the cable from the clip and you push it gently back toward the trunk and push the button to engage the motor the cable should get sucked back by the motor. If this is the case then you most likely need a new clip because the old one is deformed or you just need to make sure that the clip has a tight grip on the cable. If either of you have any more questions i am glad to help.

Sunroof

Hello and thanks for your response! Ok, so you have to remove the headliner type material inside the car. Once it is down is it easy to put back. I am so new at this I do not want to make any mistakes. Once I do that should I be able to see the problem?

Thanks so much for your info. It really helps.

Ryan- Yes you have to force the headliner a little bit, it will pop down out of its normal position, and then it is fairly flexible so you should be able to bend it slightly just enough to get it to fit through its cutoutin the roof. Then i can walk you through the next few steps so you can isolate the problem. Any of the problems are fairly simple to repair and should be good for you because even though you are new at repairing a 190 it should help you to become more familiar and comfortable when working on the car.

Q's for the sunroof gurus

My 84 sunroof doesnt really work. I push the button and the motor will engage but sounds like my Homelite gas powered 18" buzz saw. If I help the roof along it will slide back and forth while pushing the button. Also the roof never really shuts all the way. It droops in the rear driver side corner.

What do ya think: bad cable/clip? bad rails? bad motor/clutch adjustment?

IMPORTNT MESSAGE ON SUNROOFS!!!!!!

All of you guys should know that the sunroof that i worked on and the information i have been giving you is for the sunroofs that just run straight back into the roof. NOT the models that pop up in the back and also run back into the roof because they are each run by two very different techniques.

-Patrick i need a little more information about you car like model, engine, and more details about your sunroof. Is it the kind that only run straight back into the roof? The drooping on the driver's side sounds like you broke one of the little snaps that hold up the liner underneathe the sunroof. There should be 3 or 4 metal snaps, like three pronged spikes that stick up and snap into a hole above. The snap nearest the driver's side probably broke or possibly multiple snaps. The problem with the roof sounds like that small gold clip is broken. You need to pull down the liner under the roof by forcing those snaps out and then you need to pull that liner out from under the roof. Once you do this you should be able to isolate the problem. That clip is most likely not engaging because it is broken or because the cable has worked its way free from the clip. Because when you force the roof back that cable slides back with the roof until it engages with the motor and the motor can wind in the cable. If you need further instruction i am glad to help.

190E Sunroof

My problem is just like Herr Leber...I can push the button and push it back. So what is the best technique you reccomend for getting the headliner down. What do I do next? Thanks so much for these instructions. I am hoping to work on it soon.

First, i need to make sure that both of your sunroofs are the type that run straight back into the roof. To get the headliner down you need to get the roof to slide back a little bit (or all the way) and then grab the lip in the front and force it to pop down, it is held in by snaps. Once you have pulled it loose you need to slid it foward and bend it so that it can fit out of hole for the sunroof. This will expose the clip and the inside of the roof. You will see a metal guide that the cable runs into that runs down the roof. The guide ends right where the clip is and the cable just starts to pop out there and the cable then connects to the small clip. Check that connection and check the clip, once you have done this let me know where you both stand. First look at the clip and the connection between the cable and the clip.

Thanks Pete/Jr Benz

My car is an 84 190E 2.3 8valver, automatic. The roof only slides , not the pop up kind that came later. When I say the roof sags, its the whole panel , not just the headliner/interior fabric, that is sagging. Looking from the outside of thecar, the corner is depressed. I get wet alot in the car wash!

So that roof panel headliner pops off. I'll get in there this weekend if I have any energy after doing the timing chain job that I have been avoiding.

I do have to put a bit of muscle into getting the roof back and forth. I dont think the motor is doing any of the work. I'll ahve to dig into the CD shop manual so more about the subject.

190E Sunroof

Pete- Yes, it is the kind that goes straight back, no tilt features. I am going to tackle that most likely this week. I will get back with you as soon as I try to identify the conflict.

Thanks again for the help!

Well i have not had your problem so i dont know exactly what it is but i think if you remove that headliner you will be able to see exactly what is wrong because it exposes everything inside the roof. The motor sounds like it is fine as long as it is making a noise, if it is overly loud i would think that maybe the cable is broken or the clutch is broken. You can get to the clutch by removing the plastic covering on the back left hand side of the trunk, where the motor is.
