Question 1977 450SL - Missing Part?

I am a novice to the Mercedes Benz 450SL and found one that I am looking to restore (new hobby). I have one question regarding identifying a component in the engine compartment. The 1977 450SL I am looking at has an empty space to the left of the engine, adjacent to the fender near the firewall. Now, coming from the engine near this area is a small metal tube which
SEEMS to be disconnected and bent downward (crimped?). The car runs, so it is not the battery as I have seen in other year SL's. I have seen pictures of some SL's with something there, but I
cannot identify it - then again, I have seen some cars without anything at all.
Help me! I don't know what to make of it. Thanks to all.

First of all I believe the battery is in the trunk on that year. Secondly I am assuming that when you say left of the engine, you mean on the driver's side of the car, because everything is referenced from the driver's seat. Can you send digital photos?

I wonder if it is the Climate Control Servo. This is located on the passenger side (right side) next to the firewall.

Peter -

Mike Herzig's posted photo is perfect to show what I am trying to describe. When I said to the "left" I meant the passenger's side (sorry for the incorrect reference). It is just to the left (in the picture) of the air filter unit and behind a bit. Mr. Herzig said it is the Climate Control Servo and I do believe that he is correct - any thoughts to the contrary?

Mr. Herzig,

(Apologies for butchering your name in the previous post)

Thanks for the info, it is very helpful. One last question, if I may. What is the small pipe which comes almost vertical out of the engine between the air cleaner unit and the climate control servo? It looks bent down and crimped - seems odd.

Thanks again,

David

If the 77 has climate control, and I think it does, you don't have any heat or defrost without this servo. That part retails for aboit $600 and the little water pump may also be missing. You better make adjustments on the price.

David,

The bent pipe could either the remnants of a disconnected EGR system or the plugged off heater water supply pipe from the engine. You may want to spend a few bucks and have a professional check this car out before you possibly end up with a ton of grief.

The hose you refer to is related to the heating system. It connects to the servo and probably recirculates hot water.

If the heater and cooling systems of your car are disabled, then the PO probably removed the servo with expectation of replacing but due to the costs aborted mission.... anyway, that's my story and i'm sticking to it
