E320 Sunroof not working properly

I have a 04 E320 Wagon with very low miles. I went to use the sunroof today after not using it for many months ( Tucson 100+ temps) and it won't go back all the way as it did before when you press the overhead switch. It will go back a bit each time I press the overhead switch but not back all the way like it used to. Is there any way to reset it without taking it to MB and have them diagnosis the problem? Thanks, Desert

Might just need lubrication.

Nope, lube isn't the problem but I think I now know what the problem is....( should have read the owners manual first before posting) seems that the sun roof has to be re- synchronized every time the battery is disconnected. Had the car in MB a number of months ago for rear cargo area auto cover problems and I am sure they had to disconnect the battery for that job so will call MB Monday and tell them they forgot the sun roof when they re-connected the battery. Why does a sun roof have to be re-synchronized in the first place, typical over engineering.Desert

Whatever...YOU wish to believe,You Will.

This is an '04 model (Which makes it 8 years old)
How many times in that 8 years have:
1.The S.R. Rails been cleaned and relubed with the only proper Lubricant
Mercedes part # 011 989 46 51 [AKA as "Gleitpaste"] ?
2.The little Black Felt covered Rubber "Feet" (AKA Sliding Jaws)that the S.R. slides on, been
inspected, cleaned and relubed with Gleitpaste ?

The Gleitpaste does not attract dust and dirt/debris unlike other lubricants.

Without proper cleaning and lubrication the Sunroof "Feet" (AKA Sliding Jaws)will grind to a halt.
But before that occurs, the clutch on the S.R. motor will B.O.

Believe it or not the service interval for the S.R. slides and "Feet" (AKA Sliding Jaws) is also the
regular Oil/Filter change interval.

So,If what I Prognosticate is true...The S.R. has NEVER been Serviced.
[If it had been serviced by a franchised dealer even one time, there would be no question,
You would still be screaming about the Bill.Very few technicians know how to work on the S.R.
AND I've NEVER seen an R.O. with the word SUNROOF on it that was less than $1,000.00 USD ]
(Idioten S.A. s think because they're "VooDoo" to them and the Techs,
You Too are scared to death of them also and will pay whatever is asked.)

as Always,"Your Mercedes ,Your Pleasure".

Yes, the car is 8 years old but has only 32K on it and is in a garage %98 of the time with a sheet over it when it is in the garage. The sun roof has been opened maybe 10 times in those eight years. I don't know if the sun roof has been serviced at all during the scheduled services I have had done at our local MB service center, you say it is, I never thought to ask them if this was part of the scheduled service routine but I will ask them tomorrow when I call them. I have had a number of other cars with sun roofs and have never had to have them re-synchronized when ever the battery was disconnected, I love my two Mercedes the E320 & 85 280SL Euro 63K original, but sometimes the over enginering can be a bit much.

NO

I am/did not imply that sunroof "Service" is part of ANY normal
"Scheduled Maintenance" schema promoted by ANY Franchised dealer.
You'd have to request it,specifically!

What I did say is that IF Sunroof Maintenance had been performed, y'all
would know BECAUSE the Stealerships charge so much for it.

Wunnerful, that your chassis has been provided such excellent protection
from the elements.
THAT still doesn't negate the need for proper cleaning and lubrication of the
Sunroof.

_________________________________________________________________

Can you please show us the section of the Mercedes FSM that requires a
"ReSync" of the Sunroof after each "Power Down" of the electrical supply.
(AKA Battery source removal from the chassis's electrical system)

I do not believe this is a necessary step, after Battery removal !

There are no Memory Capable/Microchip/Computerized Functional Parts in
the Sunroof.
The ONLY "Synch-ing" possible is a function of the Mechanical Clutch VS
the On/Off micros-switches in the Drive Motor.
AND to them Battery Removal appears the same as KOEO
(Key Out,Engine Off)

Page 204 of the 2004 E320 owners manual says quote " The sliding/pop-up roof must be resynchoronized each time:
. after the battery has been disconnected" end quote.

He has a CAN bus car. The ECU is able to start and stop the drive motor via the relay. The purpose of syncronizing is to send a signal to stop the motor when the sunroof is fully closed thus protecting the motor. This also applies to the windows express feature as well as the power seats and head restraints.

Here is a section from Pg. 78 W210 Owners Manual (probably different page for W211 OM) -

"Synchronizing PowerWindows
If the power supply was interrupted
(battery disconnected or empty), the
windows cannot be opened or closed by
the Express feature.
To resynchronize the Express feature,
press side of power windowswitch
until thewindowis completely closed and
hold for additional 2 seconds. Repeat
procedure for each window.
The automatic full opening and closing
procedure of the windows should now be
restored."

There is similar information in the manual for the Sunroof and Seats.

I agree it is a good idea to lube the sunroof rails with correct MB lube periodically. Especially if you live in a dusty area or are given to opening the sunroof when it is cold out.

Thank you for saving me a trip across Tucson which is about 45 min. each way plus time at the dealer. The 2 second hold down of the overhead switch solved the problem and the sun roof is now working as it should. Thanks for staying with the problem and coming up with the solution.....Desert

Thank You

RichardM98,

So the Newer Sunroofs are ECU controlled.
