560 SEL rear end rebuild
Been putting this one off. I searched but did not really get the info on what is needed.
I plan to open and replace the gear oil in the diff. While in there I will rotate the shafts to opposite sides if they are not too worn yet. What I really need is more or less a shopping list. But I do not have all part numbers. If anyone has those, it would be a big help when ordering. I ordered two shaft boots. Just going to assume they are going to fail soon. Two side cover seals for the casing (think they are o-rings). What I need is to know if there is a gasket for the cover or if its just RV sealed type stuff. A part number for the diff mont would be nice too. Other than above, what else should I do as long as I am in there. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds more like a re-seal, do you have leaks?
There is a o-ring under each of the side covers & seal rings where the axles go into the diff. The rear cover uses RTV as a sealant. Make sure to use the MB factory limited slip oil.

No leak. But I have never changed the fluid and figure if I am in there, I may as well do what I can. Including swapping the shafts around and diff mount. Its all easy stuff after all, just want to make sure I have everything I need!

Why spend all this time/money if you have no leaks? Just service the diff and get on with life.
Diff mount I understand, but I have never seen nor heard of a reason to swap the axles. Rebooting axles without a tool is very difficult.

You mean the axle half shafts? I can't think of a good reason to do that, but the biggest part will be loosening and retorquing the axle nut.

You guys never heard of rotating the shafts around? Something I have done before on other cars. The shafts wear on one side. Swapping them makes them feel new. I have a slight thunk in the back, which is why the shafts are coming out anyway. To inspect them.
I guess I will figure things out. There are not much parts. Just sorta hate it when people tell me what to do. I am refreshing things because I want to. Tell me just to swap fluid does not help...

Thunk in the rear is more likely diff or subframe mounts I think.
