Replace shocks with Bilstein HD? on 190E
Hi all! Two months ago, I had some heavy tire rub crom the rear tires (I have a fairly large tire size) so I jumped into the problem by replacing the old shocks with a set of Bilstein Comforts. Now I have massive tire rub with the front tires (they rub the inside wall of the wheel well) so I am planning to replace the front shocks with Bilstein Heavy Duty's, which hopefully will solve the problem. My one question is if the Bilstein HDs will make the front of my car higher up then the rear since the shocks are harder and compress not as much?

Just put HD's on all four corners of my 300E. Not sure why, but it raised the front of my car 1/2 - 3/4 inch, but the rear height stayed about the same. Since the rear was higher than the front on my old Bilstein OE's (Comfort), the result was the levelling of my car. In reality could you expect the new HD's to raise the height over NEW Comforts (such as what you are replacing)? Not sure. Mine were 150k miles old, so even new comforts might have had the same lifting effect.

They will probably settle after a bit of driving.
HD's will be a stiffer shock. I would be asking what will happen with hd's int he front and comfort in the rear? Will that adversely affect ride / car handling? Alon

I was just looking at my car yesterday, and the gap between the top of the tire and the fender is a lot bigger in the front than the rear. Am I not measuring from the right place? Or is my front really higher? It has 165000 on it with original shocks. Will new shocks (which I am going to do) level it out?

I've seen a lot of posts in this forum comment on ride height as a function of springs, bump pads, and to lesser extent slight variations caused by wheel/tire diameter and shocks. I have yet to come across a consistent pattern. Whereas one person has bigger wheel well gap in front, mine was bigger in the rear before shock change, about the same after. I think you simply have to experiment between front/rear spring pad thicknesses until you achieve a level ride. You can search for "bump pads *mm*" to find postings on different spring pads and their effect on ride height.
