Average Cost for Odometer Repair

Howdy,

I'm looking to get my odometer repaired on a W123 '78 280E. There is one local place that will actually do the repair itself, but the guy said it would likely be $200-$300. The other places said they'd ship it to various shops for repair and they'd just handle removal and reinstall. Their prices ranged from $85-$150. I don't have a trustworthy mechanic that I've been using for a while, this is my first car, so I'm wondering on a ballpark figure for what I should expect to pay and get quality work.

Also, I'm thinking of giving a shot at trying the repair myself before sending it in. Does the Haynes manual give good instructions for everything necessary to remove the instrument cluster so I can get at the gears for the odometer? Most of the guides online assume the ability to remove the cluster and get right at the gears.

Thanks in advance

Simon

odometer repair

usually the nylon gear starts slipping on the driven shaft. You have to rough up the shaft where the gear sits, glue it (superglue), lube the other bearings (use watch oil and needle oiler)

I paid $593.56 total to repair my odometer at the dealer. The new unit costs $370.24, $36 for set charge and $152 for labor. Some member here thought it was too high, and I know no better. One thing I do know, I should have tried to fix it myself first before buying a new one. When the dealer gave me back the old unit, it was the gear came loose and I could have push it back in place and saved myself $600. I guess the hardest part is to get the unit out, especially if you do not know how to. I have no idea how to do it so I paid to have it done. The price to pay being ignorant.

Simon,

I had the odometer repaired on my 450SL and paid about $ 75 including shipping to Georgia.

I asked a similar question. Search using my name Lizem100. Ideally we would live near Benz Mac and get it done for $130 total. If you get it out palo alto speedo often can fix it for $130. Speedo repair shops near me asked $390-130. Supposedly you can push the cluster out from below and get the speedo out.
Good luck

Also search using odometer.
