Trunk area above muffler getting warm

Car: 1986 300E (W124)

The area above the muffler in my trunk is getting warm after a 20 - 30 minute drive. I just replaced the muffler and pipe which were rusted and in spite of them being replaced, it is still getting warm. The heat shield above the muffler is present and intact (not rusted).

Is it normal for that area to get warm of am I looking at other issues.

Thx.

The muffler should be an inch or two away from the heat shield, and the heat shield should have a quater inch gap from the body.

Your muffler should be just barely too hot to touch. I can put my hand on my muffler for a few seconds before I have to pull it away. Make sure they did not attach your exhaust to the body with any metal, as it will conduct heat. They should be rubber hangers.

How hot is hot?
