Is 7 qts of ATF ok for 722.40?
Drained the torque converter, trans pan and changed the filter on my 1993-W124-722.40 trans. Put 4 qts in (Valvoline Dextron lll/ Mercon Max Life ATF), then started and added 3 qts more (shifted through PRND12 as the service cd says). The dipstick is hard to get a clear measurement, hot or cold. Service cd says 6.1 liters oil change and 7 liters full capacity. I do not understand this and do not want to overfill or underfill.
As always thanks for the help!! |
Is it 7?
I did change tranny oil today and drained torque converter. Started with 4L then added 2L more and after repeated dipstick meas. finally added 1L, a total of seven.
However, after about an hour of use, I noticed that it is overfilled, so I had to suction 3/4L and it is still overfilled. I guess I just have to wait tomorrow and check again. I think 6.2L is the ideal refill considering that I drained about the same oil. Any feedback please??? |
You should be using the "change" capacity on a change, this accounts for non-drainable oil.
I did a change on a C280 with the .4 trans yesterday, came out to 5.8 quarts after converting from liters, but ended up slightly low, I put in 6 quarts, but capacity is no doubt different on a 202 chassis. Gilly |
6.2L
Thanks Dan. The change capacity is 6.2L as per manual (104) and I replaced almost the same amount after making some adjustments.
As it is difficult to get accurate reading from the dipstick, hopefully by draining the torque converter, pan, (replacing) filter and filling it with approx. 6.2L of oil will give me confidence that my tranny oil is within the allowable level.. |
As a general rule, I normally do just put the "change" amount back in. On this particular job (day before yesterday) the owner was having some shift problems. The ATF wasn't burnt smelling, but was quite black, and a little low for some reason (no leaks noted). I proceeded with a ATF change and wanted to be sure of the level. Initially, I put in the 5.8, then roadtested. made a minor correction to the throttle valve cable, seemed to work great. Level, even though I had the trans oil quite hot, was still a little low, so I added a little. But usually the "change" amount listed will give the proper reading on the stick.
