hot running 190E

'84 190E which runs hot when idling at stop lights or in traffic. guage indicates temp is okay until the car stops in traffic or at stop lights. guage goes up above 100 and towards 120. begin moving and the temp goes down.

noticed today that if placed in neutral and rpm taken to 2000 it starts to cool better but still 100 or above. new oil, new coolant, correctly diluted 50/50. any ideas as to what me the cause or is this normal??? the outside temp is 33 and rising very slowly. this is cold here and it won't be this way for long. if there is a problem i need to take care of it before the warm weather sets in.

thanks very much

Idling Temperature Problem

I am chasing down the same problem. I have found that my electromagnetic fan clutch (for the main fan) does not engage until about 110 degrees or more. It should close at 100 degrees. When it does go on, it easily cools down the car. I verified that the clutch does operate by shorting out the cable connections that go to the temp switch.

I verified the operation of the temperature gauge by noting the temperature at which the car stabilizes after warm-up. I just replaced the thermostat, which was marked as 87 degrees C. That is just about what the gauge registers.

I have ordered a new sensor and expect that this will cure the problem. Do some simple checks to verify that the EM fan clutch does operate. Look at the temperature after warm up. Derive your own conclusions about whether the temp switch is operating properly.

Good luck. I will post here the results after I install my new temp switch.

I needed a new fan switch in mine the other day. Nice and simple, just screw in the top of the engine, and plug the connector on!

Agreed. The problem resides with the auxilliary fan.

Fan Problem Cure

I replaced my thermo switch for the main fan today. First test run indicates that the fan now comes on at 100 degrees and keeps it below that temperature in traffic.

So all of you that seem to be having the same problem should consider replacing the temp sensor.

It costs about 20 bucks more or less, and requires a deep socket of 22 mm. Easy out, easy in, no need to even drain any coolant!

Try it, you'll like it!!
