My ignition coil is ticking

I just quited my noisey valve train with a valve adjustment,
only to realize that it wasn't only the valves ticking. It was/is also my ignition coil.
The car still runs lousy after warm up and restarting when warm.
Could this poor performance be coil related?
Fuel pressure, trigger points and vacuum lines seem to be ok.
The distributor is maximally advanced on it's mounting and reads 5 btdc @ 750 rpm
Car: 72 350sl, W117 engine

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Why not replace it?

Have you checked it in the dark?

Have you checked it in the dark? The ticking sound probably is arcing. Make sure the coil is clean.

Check it in the dark with a water spray bottle...

1. Fill an old windex spray bottle with water.
2. At night start your car and pop the hood.
3. Lightly spray the water around your coil and on your wires.
4. Look for little blue sparks jumping off of your wires and/or coil.

Replace anything that has spark jumping from it.

Make sure the primary wire is pushed all the way into the coil tower and seated. If there is a gap, you will not see it under the boot. But it will jump and make a ticking and show a power loss.

Also, clean the top of the coil.
