1990 Mercedes 560 SEL "New to me" Will not start???
Good evening all,
I just purchased a 1990 Mercedes 560 SEL with about 221,000 miles. The car has been very well cared for and looks amazing. THe car hasn't been started for some time, but I was told it ran fine when parked. The battery needed replacing and now it still doesn't start. I am looking for anyone that will tell me where to start. The engine does turn over and the oil pressure does build. I made sure there is plenty of fuel in the tank. I am not sure if I can use starting fluid on this car or not? Thanks Ron

I would try with starting fluid, spray into intake while cranking and see if it sputters or runs. If so, fuel issue, fuel pumps could be frozen or the fuel pump relay could be bad.
When you turn the key to the #2 run position before starting, do you hear the pumps run for a few seconds?

To pawoSD
pawoSD: We are both in Michigan. Do you happen to have experience with the 300E 4Matic that would give you an idea of what the heck I am experiencing in the way of shaking/vibration (I would say she's breaking up type vibration) at speeds of greater than 60, where, under that, the car with all of its 251,000 plus miles on it runs as tight and normally as it has always? It seems like it is coming from some deep internal area like the engine, the drive shaft or the wheel base. And, as if I could actually tell, my perception is that it might be the front end, and particularly the passenger side front end / tire.
Would you think that jacking it up and checking the lug nuts might be an obvious first thing to do. Lord, if only it was that simple of a problem I would sleep like a baby tonight. But, I am afraid this is a much more critical and, actually, catastrophic issue. I am so happy to have purchased the 1992 400E with 150,000 miles on it for $250 (even though it needs about $4000 worth of work on non-critical parts, a new radiator, new fan and fan clutch, new rotors (engine) and new brakes.... If you have any feedback or advice whatsoever I would be very grateful and if you could offer me some pertinent counsel, I would gladly treat you to lunch if I am in Grand Rapids area, which I will be at some point in the near future. Thanks, CJTucker |

Thanks pawoSd for the response. I will try these things in the morning and report back. Didn't pay enough attention to the sound of the fuel pump.
Thanks man I was also told that the transmission was beginning to slip in reverse. The previous owner changed the fluid and filter, and the reverse went out. He also mentioned that the reverse will grab if the car is on the slightest of an incline. Any suggestions?

The reverse or so called LB3 clutches are worn out. Not am expensive repair if you can R&R the trans yourself. There in the very front of the trans case. So you don't have to disassemble the whole trans.
but I found that with very high mileage cars its best to rebuild the whole trans. I have over 300 builds to my name and all the factory special tools. |

Slipping reverse is the beginning of the end for the trans. It probably needs a rebuild soon. Same thing happened to my 300SD except it occurred suddenly, and at around 280k. I imagine the V8 wears the clutches a bit quicker.

Strong vibrations above 60 would make me suspect issues with the driveshaft/flex discs firstly. Then suspect items could be wheel balance, a bent rim, damaged tire(s), severe steering alignment issue.... Are the tires in good shape and wearing evenly? (no strange wear on the tread?) Flex discs should not have any cracks in them. I do not know much about the 4matic system at all. I've looked one over a few times in the junk yard, but have never actually worked on/driven/owned one....they can be problematic.

Thanks for the feedback.... I went this morning and tried the starting fluid, and the car started and did run as long as I was pumping in the fluid. Once I stopper each time, the car would cut off. About the fuel pump making a noise when turning on the ignition, I only heard a click when turning the key to the 2nd position and turning it back off.
So, whats next? I would imagine the relay would be the next stop? Where is it located and what does it look like? Also where is the fuel pump on this car. I also noticed that the air filter and other filter in the same housing need replacing. They are both dry rotting. I havre also included some picture of the new arrival. Ron

You need to replace the fuel in the tank, it degrades with time.

90% of the fuel in the tank is new as of yesterday. Prior to that the fuel level was slightly above EMPTY.

According to the gauge? They never read correctly. Jump the pumps and see if you have fuel at the distributor, with the key on...otherwise you can blow an EHA seal. You could have bad pumps if the car sat long enough. I hope you paid well under $1000 for this mess.
