Power Steering Pump noise : w124, m103, 260e
 

I have a "bearing failing" noise going from the belt area. Its kinda a random chirp, grinding noise.

I originally thought it was a defective water pump that was only a week old. I replaced it, but the noise was still there. While the car was running, I sprayed the power steering pump shaft with some WD40 (between the pulley and pump) and the noise went away immediately. I had the same problem in my diesel toyota, and I simply rebuilt the pump with a new seal kit and bearing.

Iv been searching and searching, but no where does anyone mention the bearing when they rebuild the pump. I cannot find any pictures, or part numbers. Surly there must be one? Just to confirm, what would be the seal kit part number from mercedes? Bearing part number ?

Vehicle : 1986 260e, Euro spec.

You need to find the part number on the pump! There are 4 different versions out there, the number looks like this: A124460**80 i need the two digits that are missing. Have you replaced the fluid and filter?

I have not replaced the fluid or filter. It's not your typical power steering pump noise. It sounds similar to what a failing idler bearing with some sand thrown in would sound.

The pump number is 10.

The drive shaft lies in bushings that can not be replaced.

So it uses a bushing? Interesting. I just assumed it would of been a roller bearing.

I would think the noise is coming from the cooling fan bearing bracket.

I would suspect fan bearing bracket failure as the source of the noise also. Recently had one fail on our 1991 300CE. Significant disassembly required to R/R the fan bearing bracket. If that's your problem recommend buying a reconditioned one from your local MB dealer. There is a core charge so exchange the old one when you pick up the reconditioned one.

Interesting. It would be one of the only things thats not replaced / rebuilt. (alternator, water pump, idler pulley, tensioner were all done)

I just assumed the power steering pump because thats where it shoulds like its coming from.

Estimated time for replacement?

I had the same problem but it was the idler pulley assy.

It's difficult/impossible for me to estimate how long it would take you to replace the fan bearing bracket because I don't know your mechanical skill level, tool availability, familiarity with your car, or engine cleanliness. If the engine is covered in grime it will be time-consuming to expose the various bolts. Also, if you're unfamiliar with the belt tensioner mechanism it could take some time for you to detension the drive belt and reinstall it properly later. Plan to replace the belt and tensioner if you haven't replaced both recently.

I'm having the same power steering pump issues as Raboyto2 (i.e. bearing type noise, no leaks) on my 1992 300E (198,000 miles, 124.030, m103.983). The car has been in north Georgia for most of its life.

I've ordered a used pump so that I can replace it with mine. Then I want to rebuild mine (somehow that sounds stupid as I type it). I have searched for gasket(s) etc. for the install and am not so sure about what I find. Any help for sourcing this or verifying what I need. I use the car regularly so I am trying to pre-plan this all that I can. Thanks! (for this and all the other great help I have gotten from these forums).

Oh, my pump part number is 124 460 1880.
