Wiper/Washer not working-OVP?
I am trying to diagnose wipers not working. As soon as I turn on washer/wipers they kick out along with the windows and rear seat recline stop working. They came back operational after fifteen minutes or so.
Manual says the wipers are overload protected. Could this be the same OVP relay failure? Thanks in advance for any advice. Rando 1988 560 SEL |
No, OVPR is only for the fuel & ABS computers.
You need to check for power to the fuses, when the condition is present. |
Note that the fuses need to be physically removed to verify. Ones this old often fail with stress fractures that are so minute that they LOOK fine when still seated, and may even test so with an ohmmeter. Still, when removed from the socket, they will fall apart.

The wiper motor much like the power window motors have an internal thermal cutout to protect the motor from burning out if stalled or overloaded.
Probably not the fuse as it would blow under overcurrent and the wipers wouldn't restart. Still check or replace the circuit fuse. More indicative of the thermal cutout automatic reset. Lubricate your wiper mechanism. The mechanism tends to run dry which increases friction and load on the motor. You need to lift the cover to check and lubricate the pushrod with a waterproof grease...silicon or white lithium/ptfe works well. |
