124 300D - Getting Pushed around by the wind a bit
Hey all,
Well Its been windy these past few days and I think its giving ol 300D the push around. I was thinking its about time to consider rebuilding the rear end suspension. The front was done about 10-20k ago back in early 2010. The previous owner put all new rubber, ball joints and shocks (KYB). I think the shock mounts as well although one might look a bit older than the other so don't quote me on that. The rear appears all original and with nearly 250k on the clock. It might be time. What do you guys think? Is that the average lifespan of the multi-link and shocks? I'd like to move to Bilstein shocks on the rear but I would like to match the front end. Comforts? HD? I've used HD on everything else so far.... Thanksss! -Kris

The rear suspension WILL wear out & cause that type of problem.
I would replace ALL of the links & the shocks as well. HD's of course. Don't forget the bushing in the rear hub that the lower arm is connected, as well.

Thats what I thought. I recall seeing some posts on here with members having the same problems.
I rebuild the 190E's rear end a long time ago, long before I did significant and regular high speed/highway driving. I will start this process soon here.

You will probably need the alignment checked again as the rear toe can change with the new links.
Replace the subframe bushings and all links including the rotating ball joint bush that the lower spring support connects to (it takes a few bits of pipes and a threaded rod to remove and install) When you tighten the units up - make sure the drive axles are sitting exactly straight - This is normal riding condition for the bushings - test drive and feel the amazing control of the 5 link suspension. It makes the car a MB.

Can i just jack up the lower arm to a point where the axles are straight and then tighten the links? I am not sure how i would do it with the car on the ground.
Eventually I will replace the subframe bushings too..

Yep,
you can place the jack under the lower control arm a the outer edge and lift the car so all the weight is on the jack, tighten down everything in this position.
