Replace both struts if only one is bad?

I have one bad front strut on my daughter's 190E and our tech recommends replacing both at the same time. Is this necessary/advisable?

If they are originals...

on a 9 year old car. I would say yes but, also check the strut mounts and related components since they have to come out anyways. You are already paying for the labor...;)

The old strut will cycle at a different rate than the new one. Imagine driving over a car-wide bump - one strut will cycle twice, the other will cycle once. This provides a distinctly nautical feeling to the vehicle and eventually will provoke a run to the drugstore for Dramamine. Mr. Hildago offers excellent advice.

How old is the non-failed strut?

I once replaced only one strut on the rear of my 500E (they cost $400+ each), since it had only 44k miles on it at the time. No problem there. However, I'm inclined to think you need to do both fronts, unless the good one's fairly recent
