Oil leakage from bottom of vacuum pump?
Engine is a -92 603.9xx in a 300TDT.
There are a good sized leak of oil from the bottom/front area of the VC but no other symptoms. Do I have a potential problem at hand ? Are there any seals or perhaps a gasket around there that go bad? Haven't found any infor or pics of the VC and access to the area is rather tight. |
Vacuum Pump Leak
I'm assuming this question refers to the vaccuum pump and not the air pump.
I'm not familiar with the vacuum pumps used on MBZ, but if they are the same as the ones on Volvo's, yes they can leak. They are mounted on the engine block and have a rubber diaphragm inside. Over time the diaphragm cracks and crankcase oil begins to leak out the vent hole. I was able to get a repair kit that was a lot cheaper than a new pump and easy to install once you have the vacuum pump off |
The gasket for the pump to block is improved and a common leak.
The pump on these motors doesn't have a diaphram as they are piston pumps. Unfortunately the stamped steel cover that is not removable from the pump is often the leak. I haven't found a way to fix it other than a new pump. I haven't tried real hard though. |
MY pump went up not too long, I noticed the oil leak when I was under the car changing the oil. It is not hard for this repair.

I got busy today and removed the pump and found no weak spots on the gasket between pump and engine so I figured I might as well take a closer look at the pump itself.
Tinkered around a bit and got the front cover off from the pump and then put everything back together with some added loctite. Fired it back up and went for a spin and there aren't any signs of leakage so far. :) |
