W124 larger A/C compressor -- Same harness?

Quick question:

Does the 17cc Denso A/C compressor use the same plug/harness as the earlier model 15cc one?

I just want to know if it will be plug and play in my 88 300TE or not?

Thanks!

duxthe1 04-15-2013 06:57 PM

yeah, it should be the same

Zulfiqar 04-15-2013 07:44 PM

yes its the same deal.

you can also look for a sanden compressor that has the same fitting as MB. Its very robust and long life.

Any part# for the Sanden?

If its a direct fit and cheaper, I'll go for it.

I just want to get the 17cc so it can improve lower speed performance. I don't understand how the variable displacement compressors work, so I ASSUME you can't just throw one in and it uses electronic inputs to adjust the low side pressure? All I know is that the CLK320's A/C leaves you frozen and my 300TE leaves back sweat.

Found a great deal on a brand new Denso unit so got it ordered.

What oil should I use? I am going to be putting the sweet stuff R12 in her :)
Flushing the entire system.

The variable input compressors work just like the old variable Harrison compressor worked. They would upstroke when the returning refrigerant was not chilled enough. The current era of compressors are G spiral type, they dont lose their efficiency as fast as piston ones do. The current variable ones are electricky - they have a system that works on duty cycle (saw that on a VW diesel)

For A/C performance, my E300 W124 will numb you so much you need to thaw out for a good 15 minutes. It uses R134 (factory fill) with twin fans on the condenser.

cant say for cheap, but they are known as direct mount and come in a plethora of designs and capacities.

Mineral is called for when using R12. Of course a high quality synthetic would work well too...and can then use 134A in a pinch if you must.

Plug harness? Yes, that part is compatible. Even if not, it's 3 wires.

However, my recollection is that the 10p17 is not physically compatible with the 10p15. They are different lengths and require different mounting points on the engine block. Please measure carefully before uninstalling the 10p15.

I had a '93 300E with the '17 compressor, dual fans, and factory 134a. It had no trouble cooling the cabin, could be uncomfortably cold at times, and no temperature rise while idling. It's amazing how much MB improved the ac performance over the life of the 124.

ps2cho 04-16-2013 01:34 PM

I cannot imagine that MB changed the mounting holes on the block between years? Seems a lot of work for a simple change. From all my research I didn't see anything pointed out on that...

Anybody else know for sure?

Also, the 10pa17 is only listed as r134a, but it should do r12 without any issues I assume? Since the molecules of r12 are bigger, all the seals shouldn't have a problem...From my understanding that is why when changing from 12 -> 134a, the only reason you change the seals is because A) oil change and B) 134a molecules are smaller, so the seals need to reseal better

Basically my r134a changeover (that was done by PO) is just horrible. It cannot cool in Arizona 115F summers. I understand that is an extreme ambient temperature...I just want to get the best I possibly can. Anything under 90F and I have no problems at all, but as soon as it gets to about 100F, I will still sweat in the car and the high side pressures are in the high 300's. I think its a combination of an old condenser (even though I've coil cleaned it multiple times), old compressor and r134a in a system designed for r12.

EDIT: Looks like the manifold should be indentical since the Nippodenso seal kit says its good for the 15 and 17 series, but NOT the 20:

Please do yourself a favor and use ester oil. It is compatable with both r12 and r134.

The new compressor usually is pre filled, so you dump the oil out, and cycle ester oil through it. You dont have to flush it or anything, just get as much out as you can.

The good thing about ester oil is if for some reason you ever spring a leak, and are in a pinch, you can evac and recharge with r134. mineral oil removes the luxury and gives no real benefit.

Gotcha. Will do. I've read there are a much of different weights...what weight should I get?

---

After more scouring through the EPC, it looks like I'll need to run to the junkyard and grab the support bracket #103-130-11-35. The stock pa15c bracket is pn# 103-131-11-35 for future researchers.

Once I have that, I should be good to go! I will keep updating once I get everything. Gonna try to run to the yard today and get it since they have a 1991 and 1992. The bracket looks like it was swapped as of 1990.

Ill check what weight i used and get back to you. I believe it is whatever autozone had on the shelf.

I would wait to see if there is actually a difference on the bracket. I could not imagine it to be different.

I wonder what the difference is?

I pick up the compressor in about an hour so will take a photo. Then I can compare to photo's of the 15c. Maybe if someone here has a junk pa15c compressor sitting in a box they could measure it for me too?

i might have a 15 sitting on my spare engine. ill look this evening
