There are MB documents regarding specific MB recommended fluids at -

https://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp

Use the menus at the left side to find MB Workshop Resources.

Ive used tractor supply ATF Dex/merc and no problems at all (you can buy it for 30 dollars for 2 gallons). Change at 20,000 miles along with filter and you will be good with any D3 ATF.

Im running Brad Penn ATF-D III-H now. No specific change, feels like I did nothing. Some people use Mercon V in these transmissions and report extremely nice shifting.

Regular blue bottle Valvoline Dex III is plenty good enough. All the rebuilders use it for the 722.3/4/5.

Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids: Engine Oil, Gear Oil, ATF, Coolant, Brakefluid

this spec sheet 236.1 tells you what MB approves.

To make it easy - look up a product TDS and match it with what is available to you. As ps2cho said - the regular valvoline d3 is perfectly acceptable.

Some people even use this.

http://swepcolube.com/products/swepco-714-hydraulic-transmission-fluid

It is extreme HD ATF
