Antifreeze type (Methanol/Ethylene.Glycol)
Hi, All
I bought myself one of these coolant testers to confirm the coolant mixture's ratio. Problem is that the thingy has two scales on it - one for a Methanol antifreeze, the other for a Ethylene.Glycol antifreeze. I do not have any MB antifreeze containers to check if they mention what the coolant contains. Anyone able to help ? I would really like to use this new tool in my MB toolbox. TIA L |

answering my own post ...!!
This was mentioned in post # 209608 (on the Evans coolant)
" But Ethelyne Glycol is also a highly corrosive substance (especially when heated), " within the MB context of the posts, I assume that the MB coolant contains EG, and not Methanol ... will play with my new toy .... fanks for everyone reading my initial post Regards |

I think that methanol as anti-freeze comes from the pre-WWII era,
and shortly thereafter -- it is highly corrosive to some metals (cf. recent problems in fuel injection systems caused by excessive use of methanol additives to gasoline and biodiesel) but its worst trait, if I'm remembering correctly, is that it boils at about 160F (c. 71C?) -- I do remember as a small boy in the 1940s, when my dad would drain out the H2O from the farm tractors and other family vehicles and then substitute methanol, but he'd also have to remove the thermostats, which was a disaster for heater performance in Minnesota's winters.

I don't think you can but methanol antifreeze anymore. I haven't seen any for sale for 30 years or more.
The boiling point of methanol is low enough that it will "distill" itself out of the cooling system and you end up with only water that will freeze or the engine overheats because of low coolant. That's probably why it isn't sold any more. I've heard of guys putting kerosene or diesel fuel in the cooling system in the winter as an antifreeze. P E H |

To Ricali
Sorry you didn't have my work number -- I've got lots of tools and some mechanical skills, but also could have recommended who to call for most things. On weekdays I'm at 221-2165 (William and Mary Department of Classical Studies). Being a professor of classical culture and comparative literature is an excellent preparation for working on European cars -- I can cuss in Swedish, French, German, and Italian, besides Latin and Greek.
