I have to agree with the gentleman that said MB had mis-engineered the 103/4 and the m119's.
Back in 1993, had a brand new 190E 2.6. Head gasket went at 30,000. Regular oil changes and maintenance always done at dealer ontime. I know due to the long head design of the inline 6 engines that it doesnt heat up uniformly, and this is an inherant trademark with all inline 6's. But still. 86 420SEL. Developed massive head gasket leak at 80,000 miles. Dealer fixed for the tune of $3,000 + 92 400E - Timing chain noise at 100K. Replaced. These repairs go on like clock work. At least they are consistant. Still wouldnt drive anything else though
