Water & sputter/stall 190E

Rained here the other day and I went through some standing water a bit too fast I guess. When I came to a stop light I noticed the car would miss here and there but not to bad. Took off fine and got to a second light about 1/2 mile away. Started to miss more and the idle would dip a few times to about 400 +/-. Gvae it a little gas and it was fine. Let off the gas and it missed a few times and then died. OH crap. Tried to start it and she fired right up but continued to miss. Kept in in neutral and ran it at about 2k or so till the light changed. By the time I got back home (about 1 mile) she idled fine, no miss and I have driven it several time.

This was in the 190. The harness is original and so is cap/coil or what ever it is called where the spark plug wires come out of. Any idea what/where I should be looking for?

In mean time I guess I'll just take puddles very slowly.

It's called the distributor cap, and I would replace that without even checking. Do the plug cables next. At 24 years old, they're probably due. The ignition coil is probably OK, the dampness just caused arcing on the cap or cables.

Cool. I'll have to look into that. Thanks.

Water can cause havoc with the coil. I lost one at the car wash cleaning the engine bay, despite trying to avoid it with the spray. An easy test is to use a spray bottle and soak the cap and see if it starts sputtering. Same with the coil, just dont do them both at the same time. You want to be able to tell what causes problems when it gets wet.

Follow the center wire on the dist. cap. It will connect to the coil.
