500 e fluid leak rear axle

'92 500e with 68k miles is leaking fluid from the right side of the car about half way between right rear wheel to center of car. It is definitely not gas, and it is a low viscosity fluid - is it from self level or what? Any clues?

The 500E does have rear leveling " shocks " & that fluid is very light weight.

Check the reservoir in the engine compartment and see if its losing fluid. Its in the front just to the left of the engine between the engine and the wiper fluid. There's a valve in the rear that is probably leaking.

Thanks for the help

If the leveler is the source of the leak what kind of fluid do I use to top up until I can get it fixed?

Mine was leaking and I got the fluid at the dealer. It was expensive I think around $18-20 per quart. There is probably something the same or similar you could get at an auto parts store but I don't know what it is.

that could be leaking on the right side of the car next to the diff housing?

DON'T use any fluid except for MB factory fluid, as damage can happen that could ruin the COMPLETE leveling system!
Part number 000-989-91-03-10!!

Thanks guys...

I think I now know where and what the leak is and I've ordered the right fluid from Fastlane per M.B. Doc's excellent advice. Fluid is ~ $9 a bottle. Now if the leak is just a loose fitting that I can torque right (i.e., not break!), I'll be all set.
