Exhaust Noise 1990 300SE

After having my middle muffler replaced, my car seems more noisey than it was originally. The problem seems to be a lot of resonance or low "tuba" sound when when the car is running at about 1500-2000 rpm. The part that was replaced is the correct part number (126 490 52 15). Do I need a new rear muffler? Is this the type of sound that would be caused by a bad rear muffler? Thanks!

I am hearing the exact same sound on my '88 300SEL. Last week I didn't have this sound. Now I am hearing a "v-8" sound. Its coming from underneath the car... towards the middle. Didn't see anything bad there last week when the flex disk was replaced. I am wondering if anyone has any input... as the fellow who originally posted the question never got a responce.

Snibble.. Sounds like you have a leaky center muffler.. With the car idling.. Get someone to hold a rag over both tailpipes, and listen at the center.. That should make it easy to find a leak if you have one..

Mine leaks.. There's another $350.00..

I might eliminate my center muffler with two pipes in its' place.. I'm running out money to spend right now.. Or, that I want to spend..

a leaky center muffler, huh? What are the options? Getting some sort of aftermarket center muffler that could possibly give a performance upgrade? I am not to knowledgable on this thing.. so let me know. I don't need any smog regulation testings in my county, so no need to worry about passing emmisions. How much is this going to set me back now? What are the consequences of a leaky center muffler? thanks again

So far.. The options I have found are, buy a 275.00 or so center muffler, and have it installed..

Rip it out, and put two pipes in its' place.. Performance upgrade!!!

Or.. Squirt muffler repair in a tube into the holes every couple of months..

Anyone else have any more options???

Consequences.. Not really any unless it's a REALLY big leak..

How big of an upgrade performance wise would placing two pipes? How much would I expect to pay at a muffler shop?
