W124 1994 E320 COUPE GEAR SHIFTER seems to be disengaged from Transmission

So, I have a weird one... The car seems to have transmission issues. However the kick down switch under the gas pedal is broken, and the fuses all needed to be replaced.. But I was driving home shifting manually through the gears, the car was stuck in second, when it seems that the gear shifter became disconnected with the actual transmission.... We cannot turn the car on, because its the car is not sure what gear its in (nuetral safety switch?),... but the radio will not turn on with the key in the 2 position... I am sure its going to cost a good bit,,,. but any ideas so that maybe I can just drive the car to the tech instead of adding another $150 to the problem for a tow...

p.s. i disconnected the battery for a day, to maybe reset the radio to be able to punch in the code.... That is my next attempt... all fuses were change with the high quality ceramic ones... other than that... we know nothing on the car... had a w126 and was pretty knowledgeable on vacuum systems... little Benz oddities, and the wrong voltage of a bulb can make things go crazy... but I am new to the w124

Does the shifter feel loose or "flop" between the positions? If its attached to the trans it should feel firm and click from each selection. Its possible the shift lever came off if the bushing and clip failed....

Yes, it just shifts through the slots like its not attached to anything....

Probably disconnected then, going to have to get underneath somehow and re-attach it. You will need a clip since it is probably missing...

Most likely the linkage and the bushings and clips that make the connections.

There are 2 bushings and 2 clips.

Check any of the online parts places for your car > transmission > shift linkage and shift bushing.

The one on the shifter tang is done under the car and is awkward. You may be able to muscle it in. The other can be done on the bench after you remove the linkage.

Some heat the bushing in hot water to get it to go in easier.

So its the bushings... But now I have a question.. which way does the rod leading to the transmission hook into the gear box? Should it hook in and the point wher the clip will attach be facing U.S. driver side or U. S. Passenger side?

It has been a while since I have done (both w124 and w202) them so can't say for sure.

I'm working on my car this weekend so I can tell you then. Hopefully someone else can chime in sooner.
