IS MY ALTERNATOR GOING OUT?

Gary, remove the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator and check the length of the brushes. If they are worn down to nubs replace the voltage regulator. In case you're unfamiliar with the voltage regulator, 2 screws secure it to the back of the alternator. It's a simple DIY replacement.

New brushes are approx. one half inch in length.

300E charge

Thank you. I took voltage reg out. And it looks like your right. The brushed are only 1\8" tall at highest point which is not the middle. So they should be alot taller right?

You can buy a complete voltage regulator which includes the brushes for not much money.
If your brushes are only 1/8th of an inch then they are at the end of their life.
Better change the regulator asap before you get stuck with a flat battery

Gary, buy a new Bosch voltage regulator. That should resolve your problem. As stated in a previous post new brushes are approximately 1/2" long.
