Help my M102 is a whinger!

G'day Folks,

Has anyone with experience of the M102 got an idea what this whining sound might be?

I have the feeling it is the timing chain but I'd like confirmation.

It kind of sounds worse on this video than it is in real life but none the less it sounds a bit like a straight cut gearbox on an earth moving machine!

The popping sound is due to me fiddling for the throttle linkage - not the car.

Sounds like alternator to me.

I thought so too - but I'm not so sure now...

I think I'm going to have to do some tests with different belt configurations leaving out each bit in turn.

Translation for us Yankees:
Whinger = Whiner

Sorry I cannot provide any actual useful assistance, Stretch. Good luck.

Stretch,

That car need some stretch'n from our 43c weather here.

Possibilities:

* New muffler bearings

* Orrr American Catastrophic Converter...

But....

The possibility of an accessory looms.... Take the accessory belt off see if the whine disappears? Turn on lights, AC & turn the wheels for change in tone...-with the belt on...

Thanks Martin I'll mess about with belts tomorrow

And shortsguy1 just consider me to be a bad speller and 9 times out of 10 it'll be good enough!

I've done that - it wasn't conclusive which is why I started the thread hoping someone would say "oh it is always XXXXX on a M102"...

...I'll play about with the belts tomorrow

I'm so stupid...

...I've just killed the engine.

I was checking the power steering pump - just replaced the fluid and filter - re-tightened the utility belt - started the engine and the noise was still there.

Walked back to the key to turn it off and the engine stalled after a loud click.

I knew exactly what it was => Broken camshaft

I've now worked out what I did wrong - I didn't re-set the chain tensioner correctly when I refitted it. I didn't RTFM properly.

Needless to say I'm pretty embarrassed about this.

More information about the tensioner is here =>

As well as in the FSM

I'm a total plonker
